I've seen people who pirate with them use class 5 turrets... you have any thoughts as to why they do this?

Because some people prefer them? Transport turrets beat just about all the class 5 turrets in a straight fight, although some have specific specialities (like Corsair shield busters). Just use Transport Turret type III or IV's.

i suggest type 1 or type 4.
type three does the most damage, but has little chance of hitting fihgters/bombers.

if you are affiliated with outcasts in any way, you could use Kraken Turrets Type 2. better than transport weps, but shorter range.

I'd just go with the same old transport weapons myself. They are pretty neutral and good for all round stuff.

Contrary to popular belief, when used right, they are actually better at hitting fighters. It's a nifty technique which can toast bombers easily. However, it doesn't work with most trading ships, only those with 6+ guns and a nice turtle-like body.
I'll leave you to figure out what it is.
