Researchers and Pirates? - Xareck - 08-26-2009 How would a Pirate.. well, pirate a Researcher? Take all of their lab equipment/specimens? What would the pirates gain from that? Or just kill the researcher, which wouldn't make sense to me, as the pirate would know it's most likely a known researcher and his/her dissapearance would cause quite a bit of unwanted attention. And how would a researcher respond to being pirated? "Go! My lab minions! To the hydro-clorpphinilicatedoriniumosis stabylitatorilizationizers!" And would it even make sense for a researcher to be flying alone, anyways - should they stick to explorers and recon vessels? Opinions? Just something for us to think about. And yes, I do have an interest in being a researcher. Researchers and Pirates? - atlantis2112 - 08-26-2009 I'd say kidnap the researcher. His knowledge could be useful to the pirate's organization, as well as his.. life. Grab the guy, torture/steal useful stuff from him, ransom him back to his company. Also, I'd say it would make sense for him to fly alone. Joe Researcher flying from Cambridge University to New London get snagged on the way.. Researchers and Pirates? - Xareck - 08-26-2009 Something that could happen without powergaming, as an ordinary passing-through pirating? Researchers and Pirates? - johnpeter - 08-26-2009 Just charge the standard "protection money" fee... In other words, 2milordai!1! Of course you could roleplay more than that.... Researchers and Pirates? - BaconSoda - 08-26-2009 Pirates are either greedy or they have a cause. A pirate would either just want to take the researcher's money, or take their stuff, if they don't support their cause. Bottom line, though, Researcher ID is NOT an "immune to Piracy/Laws" ID. Researchers and Pirates? - Canadianguy - 08-26-2009 I totally agree that the researcher ID is not immune to piracy, like Zoners. Still use common sense and think RP. A trader is only interesting to pirates since it has money and carry stuff that worth money. A researcher is an intelligent guy, you could do like Dream Theater said, use his knowledge for your own stuff, then get rid of him if you want. Researchers and Pirates? - chovynz - 08-26-2009 I think, most of your target audience will not be reading this. Researchers and Pirates? - Lenny Bruce - 08-26-2009 I'm thinking that most researchers are financed by someone (corp or house) in RP terms. If they can't pay the protection money to the local crime bosses, they should ask for a raise. Price of doin' buisness. Or, hire an escort. But no free rides. Researchers and Pirates? - looqas - 08-26-2009 As it happens I have a recent experience in this. I was on my Hessian and a researcher came along. Carrying Full load of Diamonds. It lead to a bit of doubting dialog how come he carries so many "specimens". It ended up him paying up. But this thread and the encounter with him got me thinking about the other avenues than money or life. Researchers and Pirates? - Sprolf - 08-26-2009 I agree with everyone here. It wouldn't hurt them to pay protection money to whomever they were working near, then they could have more freedom in their research and whatnot. It only makes sense, really. If I were a researcher in hostile space, the first thing I'd do is make sure that the space is as friendly as possible. |
