For future reference, how do I transfer a character from one mod version to another? When 4.86 comes out, I just want to know. Thanks

There will be no need to. Just install the newer version (when it will come out) and it should work with the old ships stuff.
Just make sure to look at the updates list to see if a ship hardpoints have been nerfed and that your shield/weapons become overleveled for their mounts.

You won't have to do anything other than install the new version of the Mod. As long as you don't uninstall Freelancer completely, your characters will still be there.
