Now I know for a fact that piracy is illegal with a Freelancer ID (if you want to be an unaffiliated pilot who pirates, you get a Pirate ID) but I am interested in a different faucet of shady RP. Bribery and blackmail.

To use an example I recently set up a Kusari food salesman character who hangs around the Empire and... Well, sells food. Frequently enough I run into smugglers, at which point I'll notify them that they're carrying dishonourable cargo and that unless my hands are occupied by business they may busy themselves with sending incriminating photos to the Navy or State Police.

Usually seeing as the smuggler is full I'll ask them to place a 'holding order'. Barely concealed request for a bribe really. So far I've asked for $80 each time (in it for the RP, not the money) but so far I've respectively received $100,000 and $19,000 because 1) the smuggler was too lazy to use the trade window, and 2) the trader just lowered the bar for money quantity in the trade window but couldn't be bothered to set it to $80.

Now this is very amusing, but am I actually allowed to do this? I'd be worried that people would interpret this as piracy, which as I pointed out earlier isn't allowed on the Freelancer ID.

So, opinions on bribery and blackmail?

And I bet you thought SilverLeaf made this before you saw my name:P

Brilliant. And...yes.
Perhaps we should change the word 'piracy' on the IDs to the word "extortion"

It is allowed technically. You are not demanding credits from them for a tax or cargo or anything.
Simply that you will tell someone about something.

Unfortunately, I don't think the Admin team see it the same way.
A while back a few of us wanted to run protection rackets in Liberty. It got killed as an Admin said that it would be counted as piracy.

I think it's legal, or it should be, but we need to make a distinction within the rules between outright dropping-tradelanes-guns-blazing piracy and I'm-going-to-tell-the-cops-on-you blackmail before we start making this a legitimate business option.

Well, technically blackmail is extortion. And I've been forcing to buy them food. Does the fact that I'm selling them something (even if it's against their will) negate the fact it's piracy/extortion? And even if their cargo is full, they make a 'holding order', which basically means I'll reserve a unit of food should they ever want to come back and collect it. Not that they ever do.

And for amusement, here is the character's diary.

Well just watch out for those pesky bounties on your head after extortion. but smart idea.

i would say its fine, even great.. just because its in RP and should be good one.

So i do not see any problem. its extortion.. and say someone decides to be a lolwut and tell you " You cannot pirate me, you are a freelancer" you can always say that you are not pirating at all.. its their choice.. if they choose to pay your lips will be shut if not.. well who knows.. maybe they wont be so shut:)

I love it, and it should be allowed.

Now can you imagine a Freelancer sitting in Coronado, threatening the cardy smugglers with sending a message ahead to the LN?

Indeed an awesome idea. Although I would personally blast the snitch, if I think he would tell the cops anyways.:P

Fine by me, and my main character is a smuggler.

As long as you don't team up with a pirate or police officer specifically for that purpose while in-game.
