Right, well this is not a big deal, but I've talked about this with some players ingame both in RP and OOC but each one of them had somehow different opinion. It's not in rules, it's not on forums AFAIK.

Also, as some you may know, I hate to be called pirate, so let's settle this *rubs his head*

What made me to do this is one pirating...err...credits demanding Kishiro and one sanction report.

Have fun, don't flame.

I talked with you in RP about this a few days ago. I said some stuff wasn't piracy then, but I am pretty sure it all is by the rules.

The biggest problem I have with lawfuls demanding contraband is this... not only do they take your cargo and usually destroy it, leaving you with nothing to make up for the profit loss of purchasing the cargo in the first place, they usually try to slap a 4-5 million credit fine on top of that.

So not only am I out the 5~ million profit I might have made, I'm out the 1-2 million it cost me to buy the cargo, and I'm out another 4-5 million due to a fine.

Lawfuls are worse than pirates, no doubt about it. I dont mind losing the cargo when I get caught, but I shouldnt have to pay for that cop to get a luxury yacht.

This is the law. If you smuggle drugs into you country and get caught, what would happen? Imagine that. You are not out of the situation after the drugs are destroyed.;)

Well, I haven't seen anything defining piracy in rules, but yes, if some . . . Samura guy would do these things, it would look pretty weird

Yeah, fining is bad. But if they catch you multiple times, the fine is quite understandable, isn't it?

Pirates pirating for profit are just plain stupid, and lawfuls are totally unfair.

Think about it logically, 1 Million credits is ALOT of money to one person, pirates demand lottery amounts everytime and lawful fines are the cost of large villas.

Its just stupid.

Piracy? - Ayem - 09-12-2009

You is stupid. Bucket smash!

I think the lawful fines are fine, I think lawfuls destroying contraband is fine. Smuggling should be punished. Slavery should be punished. The fine and potential destruction are there to discourage further smuggling by the trader. The fine is also an ingame technique to justify destroying the smuggler (because we can't arrest people and lock them away for eight years).

Stopping the trader and forcing them to pay a fine is government sanctioned piracy, it's one of those moments where the law says "these people can do this, because they do it with the authority of the state, but those people can't". It's fine.

It is possible to call lawful blockades and fines something else, but when you boil down the red-tape, it's revenue gathering and punishment all wrapped into one.

Do you know how much your country's police earn from just speeding tickets every year?

Um, that wouldn't have anything to do with me would it? This questioning of what piracy really is ties in fairly well with my Piracy/Blackmail thread.
