So here I am in my Venator, cruising through Manhattan as usual, and a level 41 Xeno ID'd Starflea named "I.Don't.Like.Vegemite" comes along and tells me that for reason "A" he is going to kill me. (Reason "A" being a sufficient in-RP reason.)

Some RP happens, he gives his engagement notice, and then three seconds later I let my Trebuchets rip into him. He dies.

He then contacts me on private and tells me I killed him without sufficient notice.

My question is quite simple, if the other person gives an engagement notice, and is about to fire on you, and you open fire first, since all the RP up to this point has been leading towards combat, are you in the wrong?

Well, if you had RPed with him before, you dont need a notice, you just need to have had a chat ( a rule commonly forgotten), so if you have been talking about why he wants to kill you and why you want to kill him for instance, you are perfectly in the right to blow him to very tiny pieces.

' Wrote:I think you are only allowed to fire without a notice if it is in self defense (i.e. he has lowered your shield to below 50%, something i doubt a flea could do to a BS), so in actual fact, unless you give notice, that little flea could shoot at you for hours because he isnt dammaging your shield.

I know what the rule states.

I just want to know whether someone loses their engagement notice immunity after they issue an engagement notice?

I think that if you have not had a chat, and someone just says 'hostile on scanners' 'powering weapons, moving in to engage', then you are perfectly in the right to defend yourself no matter from whom. This is how i would see it, though a good dose of common sense would help in any particular situation, for example, if you get attacked by a flea in your BS, there is no need to return fire, just talk to him and everything should be OK. Imo, rules are situational, and can be interpreted differently depending on what has gone on prior to the incident.

Self defense is always allowed under the rules. That's why the exception "except in self defense" is tacked onto most PVP rules. You never know what may happen, and if you've been shot you can shoot back and be completely in your rights (even if it's an OORP engagement, or has no notice, etc. etc.).

The starflea and BS incident did not happen. (The situation being described, is described as such for a reason however.)

People are just watching the thread, please, feel free to "+1" and share your thoughts on what you think it should be like.

Just to clarify, he has given the engagement notice, but has not started firing.

(At which point you open fire.)

You don't have to give an engagement notice - You have to RP before hand. No where does the rule state you have to give an engagement notice.
Quote: 5.2 All attacks must be the result of some form of role play. "Engaging" is not sufficient. An attack is any hostile action that drains shields to less than 50%. Being hit with a CD is not considered an attack. If a player is attacked he has a right to defend himself regardless of who is attacking.

If you have RP'ed, and one part has indicated in some form that they are intending to attack you, you are free to fire or return fire.

Hypothetically that means that you could have exchanged pleasantries regarding the view from the cockpit, then start firing on the opponent. That would be bad form though.

You have, IMHO, to look at the idea behind the rule. I.E. indicate in the RP that you are planning to attack, with stuff like "Spooling up weapons systems", or "Helm, Execute attackplan Bravo 2 Red" during the RP. Just saying "Engaging" is pretty darn unimaginative, and roleplaying is supposed to let you use your imagination.

I'm fairly sure that I've seen people get sanctioned for just saying "Engaging."
