Project: Flavor - Magoo! - 10-26-2009

-Note: I'll be turning the other thread into something viable. No worries on epic double-threads.

Perhaps this is a better place to do it... *sigh*. Since I am not 400 people, I need your help writing some 'journals', if you will. You can use your imagination and the descriptions already given: Here to come up with your entries. I will pay anyone 500K for every entry that they make as added incentive.

Important caveat:
PM Me your entries! I will post them myself and make slight adjustments in case certain things don't make sense. You will receive credit regardless.

Here is what I need right now are entries along these guidelines, more might come later given proper participation.

Stage 1
(Note, these are just guidelines. Feel free to talk about something else. Missing your family, the cool Manhattan breeze, etc.)

Entries should be in the tone of that,

~Directly after to two weeks after launch
  • You just left Manhattan on a mission to explore the stars. You may be gone for an undetermined amount of time. Tone might be Happy: Oh golly, I sure am excited to be off on adventure! Or upset: I know I'm sexy, but why did the government have to 'volunteer' me for their little outing?
  • Are you excited to be performing a specific job aboard the ship? i.e. Engine room worker, teacher, food-worker, etc
  • Does your job meet your expectations? Do you enjoy it? (For post-bullet two entries)
~Two to six months after launch
  • Are you beginning to get tired of empty space? Are you eager to get to your destination star?
  • Are you getting tired of your job? Does it require you to work with unreasonable factors? i.e. People, hours, etc.
  • Do you have your eye on a certain someone (after all, this is a ship made for long-term survival)? If who, describe and name them.
~Eight months to one year after launch (especially broad category)
  • You pass through the Barrier. Describe your feelings and observations.
  • Having been launched in the wake of another ship, you pass California and bee-line it to the nearest feature in space (see above). Having passed through it a bit, you find yourself in Manchester. Describe your feelings and observations. Are you disappointed at the two snowballs? Excited?
  • As you were passing through California, you noticed the other ship analyzing Planet LA. Describe your feelings and observations. Are you angry? Jealous? Excited that they might find something? Happy to see signs of other human life?
  • How's it going with that certain someone?
Well, that should cover the first major chunk of the story. Assuming cooperation, we'll move on to stage two later. Now, you can pick any one of the above for your entry, and you can do more than one (just not in one post for the 8 months - 1 year category). Or... Well, see the note above. Now, jobs are as follows (the important ones at least, and everybody must have one, unless you want to be shot and vented as dead weight on a possible multi-decade flight). Parentheses indicate the number of people I want doing the job. Mostly intended as a maximum. A slash indicates however many we want.

Technical
<strike>Overseer</strike> (1) - Me
Navigator (2-4) - 1, Crucial_Mistake (Chief)
Weapons Officer (2-3) -
Maintenance (/) -
Science officer (4-8) -
Cryo-Operator (1-3) -

Medical
Chief Medical (1) -
OB/Gyn (3) -
Nurse (/) -
Mortician (1-2) -
Psychiatrist (1-3) -
Exercise Instructor (1-2) -
Physical Therapist (/) -
'Therapist' (mental, /) -

Domestic
<strike>Head of Security</strike> - Selena_Benitez
Security (20) -
Counselor (1-8) -
Lunch lady (man, /) -
Janitorial (/) -
Show room operators (/) -
'High School' Teacher (1-2) -
'Middle School/Elementary' (1-4) -
Preschool/Kindergarten (1-4) -

~Anything else you might think relevant~

Entries should be started as follows:
Personal Log I-A [Numeral indicating a new topic, letter indicating a relation to a previous numeral]
Day - Month - Year After Settlement
Hour:Minute:Second

Occupation, Name

Thus if I made an entry about a girl the character liked on the ship labeled II-A, and a month later I am on V-A, but I just asked said girl to a trip to the observatory and wanted to make an entry about it, I would label it II-B.

That's it, I think. Good lord, I hope that's it... I'm starting to hate my keyboard from an abundance of attention...

Post questions here about anything. The story, parameters, what a certain job does, whatever.

I look forward to working with you, Disco.

Needless to say, this idea is rather fascinating...it sounds hard to coordinate, but I think it would be worth getting into.

It is a bit hard to figure out exactly what is going on....I know a long duration space mission, but I don't know if this is an exploration ship or a colony ship or what not.

It's also a rather tough choice as to what I should enter into if I do this...
I am interested in a Medical position, but my knowledge in that field is a bit lacking really, so I may opt for Maintenance, or a domestic job like janitorial/lunch person/security

I need some time to think really...I'll check back with you later

Okay! Lets try this a third time and see what catastrophe happens to make me type it again. *cough* Sorry, my computer is being annoying again.

Now then, for your initial confuzzlement, it is indeed an exploratory mission launched by Liberty in one of their first attempts to eyeball neighboring stars. Inspiring infocard can be found: Here. Anywho, let me know what you come up with.

Thanks!

Just some questions about the ship's mission;is it looking for habitable planets?Valuable resources? The other sleeper ships?

And roughly how long is it taking to travel between systems without jump gates?

That's all for now.:D

Project: Flavor - Magoo! - 10-28-2009

Respectively, yes, yes, yes. As with any exploration party sent out by a stranded group of individuals, it will try and find who they were separated from, as well as anything else which might benefit them.

Well, in my initial Morse code conversations with random people, before I actually did anything with Derelict, I said that it took me twenty years to get to... "Dakota-2" or something like that, but which I had in mind as Newcastle. I think that might be a bit extreme now though... But then again that is like, 5 systems apart going at what we'll say above cruise but way below sleeper ship speeds.

In short, I'm open to suggestion for the travel time. Crucial Mistake who is also helping out pointed out the likelihood of cryo pods somewhere in the ship, so I've taken that into account for my rumination on the travel time debacle.

Project: Flavor - Barrier - 10-28-2009

Alright, here's a little something that I recently came up with. I base it on the Alpha Centauri star. It is 4.365 x 10 to the power of 13 km away from the Sun.

Assuming that systems in FL are the same distance apart, the minimum speed of a ship that wants to reach one in 4 years would have to be 2484631148 km/h or 690175 km/sec, which is more than double the speed of light. Since the hyper-space sequences in FL take about 7-8 seconds, the speed of sleeper ships (in hyperspace) would be about 39300000000000000 km/h or 76400000000000 km/sec, which is MUCH greater than the speed of light.

Well, there's something for you people to think about

Project: Flavor - Boss - 10-28-2009

I'll take a Weapons Officer and Security dude for now.

No promises on a PM schedule. Life's busy.

Project: Flavor - Selena_Benitez - 10-28-2009

I was just looking at the timeline on the wiki page,to see if there was any indication of how long the sleeper ships actually took to travel the 8.6 light years to Sirius...there wasn't any information on that, but I did notice that it says that California was discovered in 60AS.

And we're flying through it around 29AS.

<_<

>_>

Project: Flavor - kikatsu - 10-28-2009

Sign me up for chief medical officer...
when I get some free time this week, I'll write up some entries

Blast, you are right. Although what Wiki also says is that California was discovered after the ships got upgraded engines, which doesn't make much sense to me. I would think that all the neighboring systems of New York were discovered before the new engines were implemented into ships, because people do want to "exceed their grasp". Of course there is a solution to this. Let's say that the long-range communications sent by the LNS Meriwether Lewis had a lag of about 30 years. Therefore, New York would listen to those communications during about 60 as and put the California system as "discovered".

P.S. I'll calculate the actual lag later and see how it works out.
