The Borei - Leo - 11-21-2009 Day 62 Fuzzy Recording. A man comes into view holding a camera. The man's brow is sliced open, part of his ear is missing and he is bleeding profusely. "My name, is Karl Rose of the IMG. I have been digging into the past of the IMG for some time now, since my joining, to discover the truth about the Ceti systems that were closed off by the higher ranking members some time ago...I dug too far, and now this is my last recording." Hissing in the background. Alien noises and speak in the background. "If anyone receives this video, let it be known that the Borei are a significant threat to the people of Sirius..." "Yyuman'oojx'diiie'hrrrt'u" "Please, don't come looking for me. They will only kill more of you." Something small latches on to the man's neck, sending blood spraying all over the monitor and the man's screams can be heard as the video camera falls to the floor and the creature begins to devour the man named Karl Rose, alive. As he stops moving, the small creature slowly walks over to the camera and looks into the view screen. The creature is small with beady eyes and razor sharp teeth as it smiles at the camera. "Cmin'fr'u'YYUMANS" The video cuts out and only what sounds like disturbing laughter can be heard from the video. The sound of the creature eating the now dead man can be heard across the tape as gushing sounds and breaking bones...then, the video cuts out completely. The Borei - Leo - 11-21-2009 Day 1 I sighed, looking at the reports sitting on my desk in disorder. I sighed again, rubbing my hand through my tragicly fading hairline. Another day gone, another 200 some reports filed in neat order. Guess I should do one more before clocking out, what's one more? Quote:IMG Report I set the small computer down and plugged it into the mainframe to upload it to the computer system for further review by the higher ranking folks in the IMG, but when the system was scanning the computer it spit out an error when it detected the word Borei. "Classified Information - Security Level 5" is what the computer kept saying, and it had locked me out of all other functions. "Bloody computer." I mumbled as I grabbed my things. "I guess I'll come back tomorrow morning and work on it then...maybe by then I'll be able to get this stupid thing working... The Borei - Leo - 11-28-2009 Day 2 I came back the next morning to find my office completely cleared out along with a letter notifying me that I had been fired from my desk job and was being moved back out into the field to supervise the drones that mined the fields. In a strange way, I was stasfied that I was finally going back out into the mining fields to supervise, even if it was only to look over the boring and dull AI's that did the same routines every day for hours a day. On the desk as well was a Non-confidentiality letter to be signed for any information pertaining to the "Borei" that I may have read in any reports. "What's this?" I said outloud reading it again. "Borei?" I shook my head and signed the document regardless. I guessed that this "Borei" was another "Nemesis" (another AI that had gone beserk) that had happened some years back and they were covering their tracks. Wasn't my problem. I was going back out to the field...thank God. The Borei - Leo - 03-27-2010 Day 3 My day back in the field wasn't as glorious as one would have imagined. Three rigs went down within a span of 10 minutes because of asteroid storms in the area. Each one I had to manually enter and fix damaged hull plating, and wires while in a suit. I hate spacewalking, definitely in an asteroid field. Though, after eight hours in a suit, you come back much more appreciative of being inside a ship. The day was going smoothly until one of the rigs abruptly stopped mining. "Oh you have got to be fracking kidding me." I said picking up the handheld computer to see what the problem was. Code: Ship detected. Unknown orgins. Pause mining, scan ship to verify hostility."Ship detected? I don't see any ship on the scanners..." I said looking over to the radar. Then, there, long distance was a small blip, and it was moving, fast. "Drone #73, disengage mining clamps, activate weapons systems and target ship on intercept course, destroy if it attacks." The drone did as told and disengaged from the rock it was mining and spun its weapons to target the small craft. In a huge green explosion, the mining platform spun upside down and a piece of its engine broke off, spewing Mox fuel into space, freezing as soon as it left the fuel cell. The attacker was a small needle looking cobalt colored ship. It paused for a moment, looked at the command station, and fired. The entire deck rocked as I fell to the floor. "DRONE 73! ENGAGE TARGET!" I screamed. The busted drone that was still spinning derelict began firing at the small ship. It quickly darted off, flying at impossible speeds away from the firing drone. However, just as it did, a huge green light flashed past the window of the command deck and hit the drone square in the center. The light that illuminated before it exploded was so bright, that I had to close and cover my eyes. As the light then exploded, the entire command ship moved violently in space and slammed into a rock just above us, sending sparks everywhere and causing the alarms to shout warnings about hull and shield integrity. As I stood up, there was nothing left but a void field where the explosion had literally VAPORIZED the ship and rocks that were around it in the field. The small ship was nowhere on radar... "What the hell was that thing?!" The Borei - Leo - 04-02-2010 Day 4 "I saw something out there!" I argued. "The damn thing wrecked a drone and almost dis-lodged the station from its gravity anchor! It was not caused by an Outcast. There is nothing that fast that is human." "You are incorrect Mr. Rose." said the IMG manager. "The Outcast have been developing a weapon for several months in secret, we have spies that confirm this--" "You don't have bloody spies in the Outcasts, sir. You're lying through your teeth right now, and I don't know why!" "Because, Karl, you are not privy to certain information that we have at our finger tips. You are a field rep, you were a desk jockey until you...regardless. The information we have concerning the Outcast fighter is classified and you will not see the info on it." "What were you going to say just then...until I what?" "This session is dismissed." "Like bloody hell it is!" I said slamming my foot down on the floor silencing the commitee. "If you won't tell me what the hell is going on out there, I'm going to find out for myself if I have to." "You will be handing over your paperwork if you do that, Mr. Rose. You have a job to do." "Then I'm taking a leave of absence. Family emergency." "You don't--" "No, you don't know that I don't have a family emergency. So, I am taking a family emergency leave of absence. While I'm "gone", I am also going to look into this "Outcast fighter" that is clearly, not human." Without waiting for the council to say another word, I turned on my heel and stormed out of the conference room. If they wouldn't give me the answers I wanted to know, I would find them myself out in the Tau's, starting from the top: Tau-37. The Borei - Leo - 04-03-2010 Day 5 The first initial sighting of these things was in Tau-37, that is where I would start, from the top down. Where they came from, I don't know. It was possible they were these "Nomads" I'd heard whispers of for 18 years, but I hadn't heard anything about them being that fast, nor had any of the IMG restricted the knowldge of Nomads over the years, after all, we had encountered several Nomads on occasion and they were open to the knowledge. The IMG were hiding something in the Tau's that they didn't want ANYONE else to know about. SOMETHING was up here, and it was my goal to find out exactly what it was. I began my patrol at the Tau-23 jumphole and flew towards Falkland. I landed there, resupplied and began my trip up towards the north ice field. As soon as I did, something popped up on scanners, then immediately vanished. I leaned in close to my console and inspected it. "You're pretty brave, IMG for being this far north. Mind telling me what you're doing so close to our home?" said a hispanic voice. I swore under my breath. Outcasts. "I'm looking for some information." "I hope it's not on Alpha, senor, you know how we dislike your people. Tell you what, I'm feeling nice today. How about you turn around, and head back to Tau-23 and I'll let you limp back with one engine." "Just hear me out, please...if you're feeling nice..." The Outcast was quiet for a second, then he answered. "Ok, senor, you seem despirate enough, ask what you wish, as long as it doesn't pertain to Alpha." "Do you patrol these areas often?" "Aye, I do senor. Why do you ask?" "Have you seen anything...strange?" "Strange senor? What do you mean?" "Alien ships." The Outcast grew quiet suddenly. "Like the spirits?" "Not the Nomads...something else...a dark grey ship...fast, very fast. Shoots dark green energy lances while moving at a quick rate of speed. Spits gibberish into the comms, it's own language." The Outcast didn't answer for a second. "Once, senor, there was a patrol out here that said they saw something just like that. It rushed their gunboat and killed it in one hit with green weapons fire, they retreated back to Alpha after that. The council attributed it to the fact it was killed by one of your people, and they were overdosed on Cardamine." Karl thought to himself. That made sense. "Anything else?" "Just the rumors of a Jumphole unphase aligned up a few hundred clicks. That's it...now, get out of here before I change my mind, you got your answers." "Alright, I'm going, I'm going." An unphase aligned Jumphole?...Karl would be back tomorrow, and he would find this mysterious jumphole...it might be the answer he was looking for... The Borei - Leo - 04-04-2010 Day 6 I aimed my ship towards the sector the Outcast had given me and plotted my course through the field near Falkland in Tau-37. If I was to find any answers, it would be with what he had given me. Then again, he could have just setup an ambush to kill me before I got to my destination. My cruise engines leapt to life and pulled me into my seat as my Nyx took flight. As I flew, a ship came onto my radar from Falkland. The fighter was untagged and was on an intercept course for me. Something was off about this. The ship dropped out of cruise and fired a cruise disruptor at me. I banked hard right but the cruise disruptor still hit my engines and I stalled. Two more fighters appeared out of nowhere and began pelting my shields. I dodged, banked, rolled, I tried everything but the pilots were too good. I scanned their ships quickly looking for any kind of identification. None. They were like ghosts. No IFF no ID...this was bad. I dove back into the cloud and as I made a run for the Tau-23 jumphole, they called after me. "Don't be digging where things don't concern you, Miner. Let the Borei go...or else you'll face destruction." --- I was outraged, I had been attacked by my own people, I was certain of it. For what reason I don't know...whatever the Borei were, they were such a big deal within the IMG that they had to send people out to kill me to prevent me from finding out? I was outraged. I sat in my quarters waiting for my ship to be repaired after the fight. I had taken some damage and flak to the engines and the ship was hardly able to make it back to the station without dying. My door alerted me to the presence of someone outside. "Come in." I said. On the other side was one of the councilors. He walked in quickly and shut the door behind him, locking it. He put his arms behind his back and looked at me for a moment before he began to speak. "I heard about what happened, Karl." he said. "Did you nowabout how I almost got killed by our own people?" I replied with a snarl. The councilor sighed and looked behind him for a second then continued. "I didn't authorize that, Karl. The others did, you're digging too deep. Stop it, I ask you as a concerned leader." "What are the Borei, councilor?" I said. "Apparently it's important enough to try to kill one of our own, so if it's so damned important why not just tell me?" "The Borei are...they are...something you should not be looking into. They're dangerous...very dangerous...we were fools to explore those systems, and we alerted them to our presence..." "They're not Nomads, are they?" "No, Karl, they're much worse than that...stop searching. You have your answer. You didn't hear any of this from me...get some sleep, they want you back at work tomorrow." The councilor left the room allowing the door to slide shut behind him. I wouldn't be at work tomorrow; I packed up my things and walked to the ship bay. I sold my ship to the auctioneer after removing the weapons off the hull and purchased a Raven's Talon on the station with my spare money; I had the weapons changed out and took the ship back into Tau-37. I wasn't going to work for someone who tried to kill me. --- As soon as I came into the system, I launched for the same sector again and began my trek. Within 20 minutes, I came to a hole labeled by the computer as "Unknown". It wasn't phase aligned and it looked like it had been forced that way, as if by a very large ship had passed through it and knocked it off its alignment. My ship would be able to pass through, but it would be a very rough ride. I docked with the jumphole and felt like the ship was going to come apart around me. Within a few minutes I was in another system. The computer read it as unknown and no map was appearing on the screen. The computer screamed at me that there was too much radiation in the system and the hull was already corroding. In the distance, I made out station wreckage. It was human in origin. I moved slowly towards it and inspected the damage. It had been ripped to shreds; the only part that survived was a docking port that was inoperative. "Yyuman'hrrrre?" something said over the comm channels. I froze in place in the cockpit. "Yuuu'n'cmmmm'hrrrre'nnnnymrrrre" The voice said again. It sounded like it was trying to speak in the human tongue, but I could hardly understand it. It had a hissing overtone in its voice and it sounded eerie. "Nass'Borei Yyuman'jyaxx!" it yelled and a ship came on the scanners. The ship buzzed me at an impossible speed. The ship shook as it did. Over the comms came hissing, it sounded almost like laughter. "I'm just looking for answers!" I said over the comms. "Yyuman'nddddd'n'anssssssrrrrs" The ship buzzed my ship again at high speed again and once more the ship shook. The ship was moving at 1500m/s as it buzzed me, nearly the speed of a trade lane. That was impossible. The speed should tear the ship apart...that was faster than CRUISE speed. The last pass was the last, the ship didn't come back, it didn't make any more transmissions...but I still waited. Nothing. I looked to the station's docking platform and sighed. If I were going to get any answers, it would be here. I maneuvered my ship to the docking port and initiated the docking sequence... The Borei - Leo - 04-09-2010 Day 7 I landed the ship as gently on the ship's floor as I could, but the gravity in the ship wasn't functioning, so the ship wouldn't stay on the floor, it only hovered there. The interior of the station was wrecked...what scared me was the blood that was smeared all over the walls like someone had exploded. The thought of that alone chilled me to the bone. I reached back and equipped my helmet, pressurizing the inside and climbed out. The station was devoid of all gravity and oxygen. Somewhere the station there was a gaping hole more than likely and had allowed it to leak out into space. I tied the ship down to the floor with some rope from behind the seat as best as I could so it wouldn't float out into space and began my exploring. The station looked like it hadn't had power in years. The dried blood on the walls was pretty faded, indicating that it had been a while since it had occurred. The biggest thing that weirded me out, was there were no bodies on the station anywhere, just massive amount of pooled up dried blood here and there, blood smears over all the walls, and random human bones laying around... I made my way to the command station, jumping off the walls and drifting through 0 gee...the gore in that room...you couldn't see out the windows from the amount of blood on them. I drifted over to the console, trying to contain my lunch in my stomach, and began attempting to repair it. It looked like something had literally chewed through the cables connecting it to the rest of the station. I re-routed the cables and the console lit up. As soon as it did, gravity was restored and I fell to the deck with a thud. I wasn't that high up, so it didn't hurt. The station groaned and rocked as my ship, which was floating before, fell to the station deck with a crash. I grew silent as I listened to the stations support beams groaning under the pressure of the ships weight. Without warning, I heard a loud noise as the ship fell through the floor and into the lower decks; I winced as I heard it crash into the decks below. Hopefully it didn't take too much damage down there...after I cleared my head, I began my work. Ceti-15 was the system's name. Abandoned sometime just before my inception into the IMG. The date was November 18, 807 A.S. They had literally un-phase aligned in the jump-hole into the system...trapping their men and women in Ceti-15 on this station...Desolace Station. I searched deeper in the files and began seeing a pattern of incidents involving this race, "The Borei". There was little to no information them, just a listing of words that the miners had figured out. The IMG were here because of a HUGE gold field that was the size of the New York SYSTEM. "My Lord." I said aloud as I read the file. "The Oakland Field, as it was aptly named for the gold rush in California during the ancient era on Earth, has been identified as having 98% purity on a regular basis. The field is massive, encompassing the entire New York system if it existed there. IMG accountants indicate that the field will give us a 70% boost in profit if systems are kept secret, and as long as we release the gold into the economy quietly..." So, the IMG wanted to keep the Ceti-15 system quiet. "The adjoining system, Ceti-21 is off limits to all IMG personnel of all ranks and security clearances, we have lost far too many patrols to the race known as "The Borei". They tolerate us in Ceti-15, however they do not like us being in 21 for some reason, and we believe it may be their home system. No one else has been notified of their existence except in secure IMG circles, and all personnel have been advised to keep the Ceti systems secure from all traffic in outlying circles. The post finished up with a date posted at the end. As 802 A.S. The next posts detailed reports from the IMG as the Borei got more and more violent, even escalating to the point where they began regularly buzzing Desolace Station, once even attacking it. The final date was in 808 A.S., it was a video recording, and one year after the IMG had forced the jump-hole out of phase alignment. The man looks at the screen, his eye is covered with a bloody patch, his clothes are bloody, and his forehead has a large gash in it. "My name is Joshua Steele. I am a miner in the IMG...it has been 9 months since the command in Tau-23 sealed the hole without telling us...the Borei have been relentless since then. They're leaving us alone now...playing with us. It's been months since we've seen or heard from them. We're almost out of food stores and will have to start trying to get back to Tau-37 if we can...the last group that tried got destroyed by the Borei patrols...their ships are too fast...alien...we don't know if we can survive much longer like this. We need--" The station rocks violently and the man screams. "Oh God! They're on the station!! "Yyuman'diiiiiie'n'tssssste'guuuuuuuud" "Oh God." the man said holding up his arm to something off the camera "Please! Have me-AARRRRGGGH!!! *Gurgle* [color=white]something grey and fast rushed off the right side of the screen and latched on to the man's neck and ripped his throat clean from his body, blood spraying the camera and window behind it. The man continued to gurgle as he drowned in his own blood as the small creature ripped him apart piece by piece and continued to eat his flesh and blood. The creature looked up at the camera mid way through devouring the man and smiled benevolently with a bloody smile. It walked closer to the camera hunched over looking at it. It turned his head sideways to the camera and spoke the words: "Yyuman'taaaste'guuuuud" I sat there staring at the monitor as it winked out to black. The carnage I had just seen terrified me to the bone. I looked down into the bay of the station and saw three of the little bastards staring up at me with their razor sharp teeth showing. The one at the head of the three looked different, bigger, it stood more upright. More crawled out of the hole where my ship had fallen through the hole...I realized then that the ship hadn't fallen into the lower decks, it had fallen out into SPACE. This attracted the Borei to the station and allowed them to crawl into the large gaping hole that was from my ship. "Human will come with us." it said in plain English, not like it's fellow Borei. "You come or you will die here as you friends did. You want die like friends, human?" I grabbed the communicator on the console and kicked the large steel door shut and allowed its large handle to swing down and lock. "What the hell are you? You can forget about me coming with you. I'm going to kill you before that happens." I snarled. The creature smiled widely, all its razor sharp teeth gleaning in the light of the station. "We Borei, human...and you our food." The other Borei scattered quickly into the darkness of the other hallways. Without warning, the power on the station shut off as did the gravity. In the darkness all I could hear was the larger of the Borei laughing in the darkness, its hissing laughter scaring me deep to the bone. "We be coming for you...yyuman." The Borei - Leo - 04-09-2010 Day 7 No sooner than the power went out, I was already on the move to get off the station. The door was a solid millimeter of steel; it was unlikely that anyone was going to be able to break through the door, much less a few Borei. They were, from what I could tell from the files, advanced, but they had no tools with them to be able to-- The door made a loud thud noise and then nothing. My eyes grew wide and I ran away from the door and covered my face. A loud explosion sounded from the other side, but the door didn't move, I heard the Borei on the other side talking loudly to one another, I could only guess they were probably swearing at the door in their native tongue as I heard another several thuds against the door: More explosives. I looked around the inside of the room and looked to the oxygen tanks that sat just on the other side of one of the consoles. They were used to keep the people in the control room alive longer than the rest of the station so they could be rescued and relay what happened inside the station to anyone who would come to save them...that is if a group of psycho man eating aliens hadn't come to get them first. I drifted over to the tanks and slowly unhinged them from their holders and sat them each in line, floating, and pointing directly at the window. Another loud series of explosions sounded from the other side of the door. By now, the door was starting to turn red as the metal warmed up from the constant explosions they were popping off. I floated back to a chair next to the console and brought it down on top of one of the tanks. The valve spun off and the oxygen tank missed the window, slamming into the console and sending sparks everywhere. Two more chances to get this right. I thought to myself. I swung the chair at the second tank and hit the valve; the tank connected with the window and caused the bulletproof glass to shatter. A bullet might not make it through, but an oxygen tank in 0 gee propelled at 80mph did. Just as the tank went through the window, the final explosion sounded and the door rattled off its hinges. I thought fast and spun the tank to face the Borei that came through the door. The one at the lead stopped, turned its head sideways and smiled showing its razor sharp teeth. "Have a nice flight, freak." "Nass'Borei?" "Borei dead." I slammed the chair down on the valve and the tank slammed into the one at the lead sending it flying and spouting blue blood all over the console, it screamed a high pitch scream as it died. The other Borei ran down the hallway trying to escape the rogue oxygen tank that was now tearing down the hallway after them. I moved quickly floating out of the window and down to the deck floor. I made my way for the hole in the floor and looked down, seeing my ship still floating in space just on the other side of the emergency force field. I floated down to the field and looked around for anything to disconnect the field. There was a power generator near me humming with power, blocking my path out of the station. I picked up a piece of debris and swung at the generator, just as the other Borei made their way to me. "Hope you can breathe in space, blood sucking maggots." The lead Borei rushed me quickly and landed a bite on my right shoulder, I screamed in pain as I felt the razor sharp teeth pierce my flesh and bone, I swung the metal at the generator and a loud pop silenced the room as the Borei realized that they were in vacuum. The remaining air on the station that I had managed to generate rushed out as the Borei slowly died from suffocation. I floated to my ship in the dark of space quickly, the suits alarms wailing as I floated through thick radiation. I made it to the cockpit, slid the canopy back, and returned it to its original location. Quickly, I engaged cruise and made my way for the Tau-37 jump-hole. "Thank human for design. We use soon for you home. We see you soon, yyuman." said a transmission as I flew towards the hole. It started laughing, higher pitched this time. The noise burned my ears as I ripped the helmet off. "Bloody aliens." I said aloud as I jumped back to Tau-37. The Borei - Leo - 04-12-2010 Day 8 I'd made it through the jump-hole ok, but the RT was beaten up something fierce. I was venting plasma and mox fuel, the controls were sluggish, and I was pretty sure an engine wasn't even running. The ship limped back to Falkland where I sat down for the night. I started sorting through the computer files I had transferred over to the RT during my brief stay on the station. Everything on the drive was filled with records of the Borei, the Ceti systems, all three of them, and including a planet in a system named Ceti-23 far beyond Ceti-21 and all the gravity distortions therein. Only one ship had made it in an out of that system alive. Only 30 seconds had been recorded once he entered the system, but shortly after the pilot had to duck and run back out. I watched the guncam recording of the system on the small monitor. The ship darted into the system. It was covered in a dense dark fog that looked like it was taking over the system slowly. In the far distance, surrounded by shadow sat a planet that looked as if it was being taken over by some kind of slowly growing plant, but not a plant. In orbit was a strange and massive ship that looked...alive. Just as the guncam recorded this, two ships intercepted the small fighter. Two Borei fighters, but they looked different from the ones I had encountered. They were slightly larger, more aerodynamic...darker. They darted in and out of the camera's view, firing at the fighter. I had to give props to the man flying the fighter; he had skill dodging the fire waiting for the jump engines to recharge. Once they did, he made it back through the hole, through Ceti-21 and into Ceti-15 where he kept running until he reached Java Station in 23. The IMG leadership at the time deduced that Ceti-23 was the Borei home system and home world. From that point forward they barred any fighters or anyone in the IMG from venturing past Ceti-15. Shortly after the incident with the fighter, the attacks by the Borei doubled three fold. At least four mining platforms disappeared within one day every day for almost three months before the IMG shut down the entire operation. Soon after that, Desolace Station was destroyed, and all contact with the Ceti systems ceased...until the Patrol Seven incident a month ago when the Borei began slowly returning to Sirius space. From what that large Borei had said on the station, I had a guess as to why they were coming back. ...and it wasn't to be our friends. |
