Well we all know what battleships and asteroid fields make together right?

So i have been told that the asteroids are doodads and cannot be moved.

Here is the idea:
You know that apart from those there are the small, movable asteroids. Well..... what if we could remove the large ones and increase the size of the small ones? That would result in easyer battleship movement.

First; Asteroid fields CAN be removed.

Second: Making those ones large, would make them move when hit, yes.. But also make MOVING asteroids, not statis, dodgable, ones that BSs just fly around. You'd end up getting smacked in the side by an asteroid, thrown way off course. Strafe wouldn't cut in automatically either. And guns can't blow them up when your in cruise.

Not only that, but making asteroids all destroyablre would suck up more space than the internet can ahndle. It would require so much power, it's not feasible.

A simpler solution-carve a big, vertical shaft through asteroids over all the jumpholes.

An Ideea - Dab - 06-13-2007

Wat Epyon suggested COULD work. But I think it would only be done in certain places.. I don't think you'd find the RM carving up an asteroid-free zone above the Sigma-13 JH they would never send their battleships through.. However you would see the Corsairs or Order doing that, as they live in the asteroids.

This idea would only require us to find and edit all jump hole exclusion zones to stretch 100k vertically. (Unfortunately there are 150+ JHs around Sirius..) Youd have lanes going up AND down, as the exclusion zones go both directions vertically, not just one.

BTW, Lane Access Zones can be added to fields to make a lane to/from a base in an asteroid field thats free of asteroids. This is what is used when Trade Lane go through asteroid fields, and in other few cases as well. There is on example in Vespucci. There is a lane going to and from Pheonix Shipyards in the direction of America Base, allowing an asteroid-free zone to be flown from the main base to the shipyard by battleships.

Dab is, of course, right. I meant it in the context as a completely OORP utility tool, simply for moving any large ship. I don't think 150 jump holes would take longer than a week, though, would they?

No it wouldn't. But it would be eye-burning.. (Go work on a system for 16 hours a day for 2 days, and you'll get a new concept of eye-burning.)

An Ideea - Tortured_Soul - 06-13-2007

Anything, and I do mean anything, that can be done in a Battleship can be done equally as well by a group of experienced pilot flying smaller ships or even by one expert pilot.

If you don't want to give up your battleship then you should stick to trade lanes and empty systems, otherwise you should just give it up.

[Stupid Idea] Although this may not be possible within the engine, code the regular asteroids to have damage. Then you can spend all you're time blasting away at huge asteroids which are in your path, which would not only be very boring, but very slow as well because large asteroids have large amounts of HP (three shots from a liberty cruiser main gun should do as a figure).
[/Stupid Idea]

(dumb idea, but here goues)

Perhaps these exclusion zones could be something generated around capships?

I mean, when a BS is in cruise and going only forward, no "material" asteroids are generated in its way.

An Ideea - Fellow Hoodlum - 06-14-2007

Gentlemen do we have to dig this up with every mod change, and month in between ? The asteroid fields
have been left there, and as they are, to make moving battleships around as a hard thing to do ...
Make it easy, and every man and his dog will be swanning round Sirius in a BS, if you want to move the
mother its going to take a bit of thought, patience and some time.
This ain't open ocean here, treat it more like a pack ice field ... Full ahead is not an option.

Well first I agree with Hoodlum.

Concerning the above quote, its not possible. Exclusion zones dictate the disappearance of certain parts of an asteroid field. These exclusion zones are added in twice into the system files. As an object and a zone. You cannot edit a system object and zone to work with a player-controlled moving battleship.
