My Happy Virgin Computer - Eppy - 06-25-2007

The computer I'm typing off of is very new to the internet; she's been online for less than 72 hours. Needless to say, I'd like to keep her running as smoothly as she always has (ie, not very), and for that I need a defensive software suite. I do not, never have, and never will trust anything provided by Microsoft or somebody called 'Norton' and 'Mcaffee', so I ask the people, who are surely better at this than I: which programs should I be looking at as far as spyware/antivirus/firewall goes?

My Happy Virgin Computer - Koolmo - 06-25-2007

*Holds up hand*

I'd like to be the first to slip a Trojan aboard her, seeing as she has no other protection... BWAHAHAH!!

I use AVG 7.5 meself. Works fine, updates on startup or manually, blablabla. Never had problems with it.

Please clarify, is that your computer is a virgin? Or that you are a happy virgin that uses a computer?

Confused as always.

And yes, AVG is good

My Happy Virgin Computer - Koolmo - 06-25-2007

Epyon WISHES she was...

But its really him.

My Happy Virgin Computer - Axe - 06-25-2007

Oh well. Nothing wrong in that, Epyon.

A good firewall is essential also.

My Happy Virgin Computer - Koolmo - 06-25-2007

M'yes, quite. I find that a router does just as well, I use one to split the 'net between two PC's, and to fill that purpose.

Must always be protected, doncha know.

My Happy Virgin Computer - Axe - 06-25-2007

Hmmm, split the net... sounds painful.

Norton tends to be a bit of a b*tch for most people. I wouldn't recomend it.

My Happy Virgin Computer - Koolmo - 06-25-2007

Sometimes you have to take the pain with the gain though, and I'm into that anyways:D

Yea, Norton will let ANYTHING through, given 1/2 a chance, and it buggers with the rest of your comp too.

My Happy Virgin Computer - Axe - 06-25-2007

Zone Alarm is a pretty good firewall. I use it at the minute.

Careful Koolmo, I might get out those flailled USB cords... :P

My Happy Virgin Computer - Koolmo - 06-25-2007

Well, in reality, you should have both. I do use ZA as well, but you have to be really firm with it, or it'll get all over the place. Gets into your fridge, especially.

USB cords eh? I'm old-school, I use a printer cord with the end ripped off, and a little screen-cleaner to wipe up the blood.
