Now, this irritates me a bit.
Folk here seem to think that if you are 'Allied' you can basically act as if you were in both factions, such as a Liberty pilot flying around defending Bretonia from pirates.
This isn't quite right. Alliances are made for reasons, and not ones like 'I want to fly around everywhere shooting pirates.'
Liberty ships should not be protecting the Tau-31 route, for instance.
This would be like the U.S.A sending troops to the Falklands to aid the U.K in that war. Silly.
Now, Liberty and Bretonia allying against a significant Lane Hacker presence in Magellan, which hits both of their shipping, that would work.
But having ships fly around everywhere due to 'alliances' is rather simplistic politics in my opinion.
Am I wrong?

I think you're right, it's that some people misunderstand the meaning of the "alliance". It would be more accurate and correct when such "alliances" have some guidelines as to what and how exactly each side will help each other, to which extent. It is economical partnership? Is it certain war one side needs help from another? It's politics after all, even in-game, so better if they'd look like that and not "buddygang" roaming around Liberty in search for any PvP.

It would be awkward to enforce anything I admit, but having to fight as many Liberty ships as I do Bretonian ships in Cambridge is a bit silly. I mean, I like the challenge, but they really shouldn't be there (names no names).
If they want to protect Bretonia, join the Bretonians!

I have to disagree slightly. They should not be out and trying to police space, i agree with that. However, i disagree on the

However, flying over there looking for trouble before they are needed is abuse of the system.

The USA and the UK have been allies since after WW2.
Why wasn't the UK in Viet Nam or the USA in the Falklands?
Because alliances are very complicated, and for particular purposes.

USA were in the falklands, indirectly, of course.
When an alliance is created, the limits of it are established.
Take as an example AW-HF alliance and RM-SF alliance.
AW and HF have a complete joint defence pact. That means that AW and HF ships act as one when defending their homelands.
SF and RM have a different kind of alliance. They help each other in war, have the same enemies, but each takes car of his own space. It means that they don't interfere with each other during everyday life.
So an alliance is a term applied to a lot of things. It can be just to share information, help in wars, full joint defence (in the foreign or homelands or both), etc.
All that has to be defined in a document, treaty, or whatever you call it at the time of the creation of said alliance.

Since when have there been Corsairs in Liberty?
There aren't any. So Liberty ships shouldn't be attacking Corsairs in Bretonia.
Also, 'full homeland defence' pacts are very rare, although not unheard of. But they seem to be the only kind of alliance going, save the SF/RM one, which is basically non-existent.
