Discovery Dictionary - Xoria - 10-06-2007

Ladies and Gents,
Being both new to Discovery, MP, instant message type chatting and other communication forms used around here (I know, I know. And I just got indoor plumbing 2 days ago too!), a lot of the abbreviated terms and jargon that are used both in space and on the forums is quite mysterious to me.
As I'm sure that you will find it far more annoying to have to explain yourself to me while attempting to interdict me in space while I am sneaking around your vastly superior behemoths (I think that is the technical term), if you are reading this post, please just grab one term out of the reaches of your fertile mind, and define it for me real quick. Just pick whatever comes to mind. Chances are that I won't know it. I am especially interested in terms that relate to prohibited activities. I have seen "shield running" elsewhere, and while I think I have figured out what that means, I can only make an educated guess. So terms related to combat, piracy, and rule violations are especially requested. Just grab one out of the air and define it real quick.
Think of this as a dictionary of Discovery's often used abbreviations and jargon.
I'm a quick study, but I am not a mind reader.
You'll save yourself time in space if you educate me (and others) here.
One other quick thing: I have been frequently encountering clans while flying through Sirius that I cannot find any information about on the forums. Please keep those diplomatic lists and factional info up to date for those of us who are in danger of drowning in the flood of ignorance.
On a more general note, I'll just take this opportunity to say that I am really enjoying this community, and if you see me screw something up, it is from ignorance, not intent. I am studying hard to get up to speed. Your definitions added here will help immensely, as will your kind corrections wherever applicable.
Regards,
Xoria

IE: believe it or not, I had to ask what "AFK" meant, just the other day. Wouldn't you rather teach me here than have me badger you while 3 Rheinlanders are busy keying your shiny new paint job?

Well..

1st things first: read the rules.

Then I guess:

OOC ---> Out Of Character : A lawful joking with a pirate, Lol'ing in public, 1337 (Leet) Speak.
Rgr ---> Roger.. Not to hard to tell:P

Mostly, just use common scene.

Clans are nuts right now, I'm hoping they die out....

other than that....any specific words?

ooc, or //, or(fafa) are all out of charachter chat indications, there are more, but, ooc and // are the prevalent ones,
Capship whoring.....using capships for no reason.....
Quick Docking: if you fly right up to something, then dock, it works much faster.

Sheild running...using thrust, or cruise to leave fight, or just fly around fight, while your sheilds come back...though....thrusting while dodging doesn't seem wrong to me, as long as you don't leave the area of engagement.

Discovery Dictionary - Juan_Arquero - 10-07-2007

Note that a gunboat qualifies as a capital ship, despite UKMG-ThunderHawk's claim that only cruisers and larger are capital ships.

I use "bots" to refer to nanobots, but most players use "bots" to refer to NPCs; Likewise, I use "bats" to refer to shield batteries.

I've looked through my bookmarked Freelancer sites, but couldn't find any glossaries/dictionaries.

b/b refers to bats/bots
[E] means awesome

Spam.

Using anything in overabundance, such as:

Missile-spamming (firing many missiles in hopes that one will hit)

Mine-spamming (similar to missile-spamming)

Capship-spamming (using many capital class ships in an attempt to eradicate an enemy with unnecessary firepower)
Also see 'Capship-whoring'-- A term I, personally, never liked.

In the forums, 'spam' simply means posting something with no real value to the current topic. It can also be 'spamming' if someone posts many times, usually in an attempt to get their post count up.

Here's a useful guide for people new to "urban language."

FL: Freelancer;

Military abbreviations used by wargamers (e.g. me) and military forces around the world, including the U.S. Navy (confirmed by a Freelancer player I know who was a U.S. Marine):

GB: Gunboat (I've only seen this one used by FL players and in a science fiction wargame);
DD: Destroyer;
DE: Destroyer Escort;
CR: Cruiser;
FR: Frigate (but most FL players, including myself, use FR to mean Freighter);
BC: Battlecruiser (I think I've seen this one used a couple times);
BB: Battleship (not BS which has a not-so-nice meaning to most people);
CV: Aircraft Carrier (I can't explain this one, but it dates back to at least World War II);
CVL: Light Aircraft Carrier.
