A recorded video comes on screen. In the foreground, a middle-aged man in protective gear is smiling at you, holding onto a datapad. In the background, you see a Tropical theme, with a beach and large saltwater lake. On the beach, is a massive gun, as large as most orbital defense cannons. In front of it, about five hundred meters across the lake, a large plate of hull paneling is settled, and it looks as if it was from a Battleship.

The man clears his throat, and begins to speak.

"Hello my friends, fellow scientists, researchers, and engineers! Hello to all of the Admirals and Commanders, or Officers who may have received this transmission. I am a man who is quite keen on developing outdated ideas, or perhaps inventing my own things. I have devoted large amounts of wealth and time into my creations, such as the one you see now, behind me."

He nodded towards the massive gun behind him, continuing.

"That there is a working prototype. Based off of the believed inefficient weaponry design of the Railgun, I have developed something that will fight against such a claim. This weapon specifically is designed to fire twelve-hundred pound rails made of a undisclosed metal alloy that is both dense and strong. The rails are charged with a massive electromagnetic generator, and then are shot out with enough velocity to exceed the speed of sound ten times. The rail is then capable of being fired nearly one hundred and fifty miles on an atmosphere similar to that of Manhattans without losing elevation or speed. After that, it begins to fall to the ground, and come to a halt. In space, it will continue until something gets in its way."

He moves to the side to give the camera a better view of the weapon, scrolling through the datapad slowly.

"But don't take my word for it, let me show you how she works. This weapon is aimed at hull plating, similar to that of a heavily armored Battleship. Capable of withstanding your ordinary ordinance of Antimatter from a Supernova Cannon, it is extremely tough. But now watch what happens here."

The surrounding air gains a loud buzzing sound, and then a high pitched 'whir'. Electrical arcs jump across the gun and become more frequent. Yelling now, he continues to talk.

"That sound you hear, and the sights you see, that is the weapon at full charge! Now watch carefully as to what happens!"

A wooshing sound, which gradually becomes much louder, fills the air. Moments later, a huge blast brightens the area, and what looks like a bolt of lightning, and a white mass, presumably the rail, flies across the lake. The water is blown aside as the rail impacts the hull plating, and in the blink of an eye, a hole fourteen feet in diameter was ripped into the hull paneling. The area soon quiets down. The generator had shut down to cool off, and all was silent. The image was staticy for a moment before it was able to restore itself. The man steps back into view, smiling broadly to himself.

"As you can see, it is highly effective against unshielded objects, and it'll tear through them like it's paper. But alas, it is ineffective against shielding. It may cause some drain on your targets shielding array due to the impact and electrical charge, but it won't be significant."

The gun releases a bit of smoke and steam, and then the generators kick on once more.

"For such a devastating weapon, it takes time for it to be fired again. Trying to fire it when it isn't properly re-armed would be catastrophic. But enough of that, all of the specifics can be explained soon enough."

"Any questions? How about an offer to get your hands on this piece of weaponry? I won't favor any group, and just because they were able to get it and you weren't, it doesn't mean that I support them."

He smirks a bit, and then bows, the video ending.

Captain Malrone, Navy Primary Fleet.

Very interesting weapons you've got there, Mr...? Oh, I didn't catch your name. I'm sort of a double-threat here, being an engineer and officer - However I have a few questions about this prototype.
  1. Can it be retrofitted and mounted on large capital-class ships?
  2. What are the specific power input requirements?
  3. Whats the base/core are you using for the electromagnet?
  4. Is the material that the "bullets" are made out of easily manufactured and easily supplied?
  5. Total cost of this apparatus?
Its a very interesting demonstration you've shown us here and I hope to be talking with you in Liberty at some point.

Captain Jack Malrone

That is very interesting Dr... I am affraid we must introduce ourselves so we may know who we are talking to.
I am Okada Kazuya, one of the Directors of Samura Heavy Industries and it is an honor to make your acquaintance.

Now on to the matter at hand, I too am after more information about this weapon and any others you are able to demonstrate.
Perhaps you would like to come to Kusari where I am sure we could arrange for a facility and funding to further develop your capability in this field.
I look forward to hearing from you.

Sayonara,
Okada.Kazuya.

[*]Can it be retrofitted and mounted on large capital-class ships?

Yes. This current prototype you have seen is capable of being mounted on a Siege Cruiser. In fact, that is the very power generator it is running off of right now. However, you would have to modify the ship slightly to deal with the size.

[*]What are the specific power input requirements?

High. One round would drain the entire core of a Siege Cruiser, and take about sixty seconds to be safe to fire once more. The amount of force it exerts could also damage an improperly braced frame of the Cruiser. Overloading and damaging the Cruiser would be bad indeed.

[*]Whats the base/core are you using for the electromagnet?

The electromagnet is simple. An Alternating current being quickly charged between my special Superconductors, and then forced through the entire length of the barrel charges both it and the rail. And as two same polar magnets would react, it launches the rail. Of course the charge is so powerful, it creates a stream of plasma, which looks remarkably like lightning.

[*]Is the material that the "bullets" are made out of easily manufactured and easily supplied?

The rails themselves are somewhat expensive, but the materials aren't entirely hard to come by. The rails are about a quarter of a million credits apeice, but that was with my current resources. I'm not an entrepreneur, so I'm not good at haggling. The price though is countered by the safety of the rails themselves. Much of the damage caused in capital ships is the ordinance inside exploding. These rails are nothing more than a bit of inert metal.

[*]Total cost of this apparatus?

This prototype cost me roughly two billion credits to build and develop, but producing another would be about one fourth of that. The price is considerable with our current technology, but that doesn't mean we can find ways to make it more easily produced.

I hope this answers your current questions, Captain Malrone.

And feel free to call me Doc, if you'd like.

Mister Kazuya, it is nice to hear from you. I would love to work for you, but I'm giving all of the other groups the chance to give me an offer, just to be fair. I work based on short-term contracts. Usually they're as short as four months, but I'm willing to work with any of your research groups up to two years if you can offer me good working conditions, resources, and a workforce. What I do is just myself, and a very small group. It took us two months to build the Railgun, and nearly three years to develop it.

I hope you can understand. My knowledge isn't just for one group, but I want to share a little bit with everyone.

RE: Rail-gun technology

This is Conrad Rockford, forward Sirius contact for The Cincinnatus Guard. Your message has been flagged on our system for note(s) of importance.

I have received your proposed rail-gun technology manifesto. On paper this technology has always looked impressive but failed miserably, most noted cases were down to the unattainable power supply, even from some large stations and weapons platforms. You seem to think you have a usable platform on which to rectify these problems and as such I would like to request a personal viewing. If your technology is as you say then the group that I represent will be most interested in your rail-gun. Like Samura's Mr Kazuya, we also can offer facilities and, being in the Edge Worlds, we could also carry out testing on some unsavoury live targets. We understand that the information you have is for the wider buyers market, but a bit of collaboration between the 2 of us will reap rewards for both of us.

Dear Sir,

Guten tag mein herr! It is wonderful to see someone working on, shall we say, new innovations in the field of high velocity projection. I must admit, das Militar der Republik Rheinland takes a great interest in minds of a... high caliber. It is clear to us that you have one of these gifted minds, not to mention a most wonderful toy on display beside it.

Before we delve any further and make offers of a promissory or otherwise monetary nature, we would like to get a feel for the capabilities of your intuitive powers. I this case, we would like to find out just a little bit more about your toy.
  • What are the exact dementions of your creation?
  • Can it function in a zero-gee environment/vacuum?
  • How much power does it require to fire?
  • Can It be scaled up/down?
  • How fragile is it and can it be reinforced with armor?
Depending on the answers to these questions, we may have a very interesting offer to talk to you about.

With the hope for a brighter future,

Rheinland Military Mid-command Officer, Hauptfeldwebel Hans Putzkammer.

A pleasure to speak with you mister Rockford. Your offer is very pleasant, and I will consider it with all the others I will receive.

Please understand that I have no quarrels with any particular group. Outcasts, Corsairs. Liberty, Rheinland. I enjoy everyones presence, as most are civilized when you act so in return. Testing on live targets would only be likely if they were attacking me.

[*]What are the exact dementions of your creation?

To give you a rough estimate; The length of it, from the base to the tip of the barrel, is about one hundred and twenty meters. At its broadest, it is about thirty meters. This is a large prototype as you can see.

[*]Can it function in a zero-gee environment/vacuum?

Yes. As long as the Superconductors have the proper insulation to direct the entire current to the rail and barrel, it will work even better with the lack of the atmosphere. In space, there is little to no friction, no gravity to pull the rail down, and very few solid objects beyond your target.

[*]How much power does it require to fire?

If I had to put it into a number estimate, it uses about 940,000u of a Cruisers power supply, currently. Again, this is just a prototype, and is still somewhat unfinished. We have yet to refine its systems.

[*]Can It be scaled up/down?

Yes and no. It can be scaled down to fit most classes of Cruisers, but it cannot be put on smaller craft. Kusarian Destroyers may also be unable to mount it. But it can be scaled up in size to fit any battleship modified to carry it. The weapon itself has to be so heavily braced from the impact caused by firing it though, that it would serve only as a coaxial mounted forward gun.

[*]How fragile is it and can it be reinforced with armor?

Normally, it is as durable as any other weapon you can fit on a capital ship. However, when it is fully charged, and preparing to fire, it could be possible to overload it with a proper electromagnetic charge, such as EMP mines impacting it one too many times. It could either overload your powercore and cause them to rupture, or it could shut down the weapon. The chances of that happening however are somewhat slim. It could be reinforced, but I would recommend not, since it would increase the time it takes to cool down. On a larger craft like a Battleship, it could have its own dedicated cooling systems, but repeated fire happening faster then twenty seconds causes serious stress on the braces and the weapon itself, making for very expensive maintenance.

I hope that answers your questions properly, Herr Putzkammer.
