It's nice to have a surplus of credits.

It's nice to be able to go and 'pimp' your ship with lights.

Doing it to your Trader might make it look pretty, but did you know it also makes it VERY visible?

We have radar that can pick up ships at 10k and once they are there it can track them all the way out to 15k.

Did you know that you can see those flashing 'pimp' lights out to at least 10k?
You might not be able to see the ship, it might not even be on your radar, but if you are looking in the right place, you will see those pretty lights.

Also, you can see gunfire for a heck of distance also.

I've seen both of these thing for myself in the last couple of days.

I'm not against 'pimp' lights, but in my opinion, putting them on a Trader is like hanging a sign on your house when you go away telling people you aren't there.

Also, I ran into a guy who basically told that because he had a Zoner ID/IFF that he wouldn't get pirated.
What do you say pirates of Disco?

about the lights - its every traders own decision to be more or less visible.

about zoner traders: depending on your faction - you ought to decide based on your factions RP. for some factions - it might indeed by detrimental to pirate a zoner ( like factions that HIGHLY depend on freeports ) - others couldn t care less.

what should NOT guide your actions are ooc decisions.

True men mine Hegemons.

Pirating traders? Nah, too much effort.

Also, pointless thread.

Depends on the lights. Obviously you don't wanna put the big orange strobes on your ship if you're trying to stay low. But you could always stick on a few of the small, pulsing purple lights. Stylish and inconspicuous.

Very few threads are totally pointless.

Also, this is my opinion and I want to hear what other people think.

I put it here instead of 'flood' as it does have an RP aspect to it, the "Will Pirates pirate Zoner ID/IFF traders" question and I can hopefully expect more intelligent answers, one of which has already happened. *looks at Jinx

The answer *could* directly impact what happens with one of my traders.

As a Trader there is a definite plus side to not being readily visible. :D

Put docking lights on your trader @ be invisible until you dock.

A nice thingy for this type of sneaky smugglers.

(This kind of lights is invisible until you hit F3.)

Those running lights are there to increase visability, to avoid unneccisary collisions in space. You'll notice that aeroplanes and semi-trucks have running lights so that they're visable during the night. You might not think it, but it can get pretty dark in space sometimes. A lot darker than what Freelancer depicts.

Deep space, for sure, but we don't fly in deep space. And really, /really/, the few people that would be are ones that /don't/ want to be seen in the first place.

EDIT: Oh yeah, not to mention, like, sensors.

To be honest, when am Pirating I'm not looking for lights. Most transports themselves are easy to spot, even at 12k distance's. I was sitting at Freeport 10 a few days ago. two Transports were avoiding the station staying 10k from it at all times. Knew by just sight what there ships was. A Pirate Transport and a Firefly. I personnally don't see the difference in lights in aiding sight. unless its in a field like in Omega-7, but it is not lickly to give you more benefit then your scanner does in fields like that.

A Firefly in California facing toward black space, lights help.
