The need for speed - Stuart.croll - 03-29-2011

Honestly I did a search prior to posting here.

I started my online Freelancer gaming on the Berlin server which was admittedly described as a fun sever. (Role play really didn't come into it). One of the main features was a permitted cruise speed of 600 klicks.

As far as I can recall this didn't much affect gameplay but it cut down on the tedious episodes between jump holes and of course it made trading somewhat more profitable as it cut down on transit times.

I personally would be for it.

My aplogies if this subject has been dragged over the coals a hundred times already.

Admins feel free to delete at leisure. But please don't bollock me as I'm really not trying to cause an argument. :)

Bollock you?

And nah I actually would like faster thrusters than cruising. Makes fighters SUPER impossible to hit.

But increasing the speeds meh, I believe it is just fine.

I believe it has already been increased slightly from vanilla 300 to 350. I am happy with the speed they way it is. (Flying through asteroids can be a pain at 350 imagine it was 600.)

It sounds like a nice idea, but have you tried going through an asteroid field of any sort at that speed?

It's downright dangerous.

As it is now, the shields on my BWT take a very small amount of damage when I hit a LARGE rock and I'm finding that the 'goto pilot' isn't that good at avoiding LARGE rocks at 350k.... can you imagine what it would be like at 600k?

It would be like being in a pinball machine.

As for the subject being dragged over the coals a hundred times before, I'm sure it has and that someone will eventually post a link to the appropriate thread.

Increasing cruise speed will force a complete rebalance of all non-lane trade routes and commodity prices. If it will be done, it will be done in a VERY distant future since the commodity balancing for 4.86 is already done.

It has been brought up a few hundred times, and NO! do not need more speed.

Personally, I have no problem to go faster with my cruise engines ... inRP, I'd have enough money to hire a mad scientist to boost my engines to the very critical level! So 375 or 400 might be okay.
At least for smugglers, cause it will take way longer now with the tradelane scanners because smugglers now REALLY have to avoid them ...

And the asteroid avoiding issue? Manual flight control
Otherwise, don't worry about the shields, I take a few bumps here and there, and even if my shields are so low that my hull gets damaged, it's better than getting shot at by pvp-seeking players.
Asteroids can't sanction you:D

I just hate seeing big ships go fast.
It just doesn't look right.

350ms is alright imo.

And LF's IIRC will go faster in cruise in the new version.

I think Light Fighters should be able to go 250 with special FLhook thrusters that run out of energy faster than normal ones.

open up single player with speed mod enabled. cruising at 600ms in a fighter through asteroid field is asking to die.

however, i've had an idea. not sure if possible, but what if cruise speed starts slower, say 200m/s, and increased the longer you were in cruise, akin to the way that speed declines when you're in engine kill? perhaps a maximum of 450-500ms - where if you hit anything you bounce around like a retarded puppy with bladder issues.

this would mean that large ships would have to stop periodically to enable them to navigate asteroid fields properly... anyone for a game of ambush?
