"Best" keyboard layout is always the one you feel most comfortable with and helps you do better.
I use this:
Code: W - Strafe Up
S - Strafe Down
D - Strafe Right
A - Strafe Left
Q - Drop Mine
X - Reverse
Z - Free Flight
C - Countermeasure
V - Rear View
1 to 6 - Activate Weap Group
Shift + 1 to 0 - Fire Weap 1 to 10
Space - Mouse Flight
F - Shield Batteries
G - Nanobots
O - Scan
[ - Trade Request
] - Invite to Group
(I've changed it so I don't accidentally invite someone instead of scanning them)
Mouse 1 - Mouse Flight
Mouse 2 - Fire
Mouse 3 - Tractor Beam
Mouse 4 - Thruster
Mouse 5 - Fire CD
Mouse 6 - Engine-kill
I think these were the important ones, dunno if I missed any.

' Wrote:Guess its a personal preference. Yep, I got thruster on W :$
and strafe up on tab, pretty retarted yep:Dbut that's how I got used to it from start, and played to long to change it.
I also have fire weapon group 2 and 3 on E and Q.

I moved my mouse flight to the Tab button and use Space for thruster. I find it makes strafing and thrusting at the same time much easier.
Best keyboard layout for a fighter? - Cameron - 04-03-2011
wsad: strafe
q: weapon 8
e: mine
E: CD
r: weapon 7
f, g: bats, bots
h: turret view
b: tractor
Tab: thruster
z: engine kill
x: reverse
c: teamspeak press to talk
Space: mouse flight
Num 123456: weapon groups
That's what I use. Its good for HF, VHF, SHF, bombers with 6 guns/turrets works for bigger ships too if you put the heavy weapons in the right place.
