I was offered to borrow the new E8400 dual-core CPU (Penryn, 45nm) for testing for and I decided to use it.

There are screenshots of E8400 on air with speed over 4,5GHz, which seems unbelievable, but if it goes well, this might be a great performance improvement we have all been looking for.

I'll be installing and testing it on Saturday morning (GMT), so the server will be down for a couple of hours.

Sorry I would do it during the week, but I have a lot of work and this offer I got is valid only for a week...

I am sure you wont get no Complaints buddy,

People can spend time re-reading the rules, getting their role play sorted, spending time making sure they only have Discovery running, Taking the dog for a walk or speaking to family.

i hope the test goes well .........

Cheers

Awesome Majkp. That's excellent to hear. It's not a problem that it has to be on a weekend; We all need to get off this game on occasion anyways.

Hope it works!

I'll me more than patient with a few hours of downtime
for months of better server performance. As i hope
everyone else can be.

If it helps improve the server I'm all for it, a few hours downtime for me won't hurt at any rate. Means I can watch all the DVDs I just bought.

E8400 CPU runs at 3GHz Stock, why would you want to overclock it that much? Its just mean!

These guys are nutcases with Liquid Nitro/water cooling etc and dont use their insanely overclocked CPU as a server.

You probably know what you're doing, but for a 24/7 server maybe leaving it at stock speeds would eliminate the possiblilty of hardware crashes?

I have one of these monsters, possibly the best 140 quid i have spent in a long time. Its fast enough without overclocking IMO.
