So I'm going to try and be in the BAF, though as an indie for the moment until I relearn the lawful side of the many rules of Bretonia.

So, to start off as a fighter, would a Paladin or a Templar be a good start? I don't feel like jumping into a Hussar again.

there all ugly, so dont choose based on aesthetics

Very helpful.

Go with a Templar, not a Paladin. Paladin is not a very good ship. It looks like a tie fighter and flies like a tie bomber.

Get a Paladin so I can mini you.

Hmm, fair enough.

Even more reason to avoid the Paladin then.

Ive found a lot of folks - myself included - keep aesthetics as part of their criteria when picking a ship to fly. Bret ships arent great looking, from a certain point of view, and the Templar looks like something outta HG Wells.

*shrug* jus' sayin, if your looking for sexy, Bret aint where your gonna find it - but the real truth of that is that "sexy" is subjective.

The Paladin is one of the worst HFs from my PoV. It is nearly as big as a VHF and is only a bit more agile. I for my part like it even more when my oponent is flying a Paladin than whenhe's using a Templar. I can SNAC it far more easily.
So, get a Templar.

To be honest, I would suggest a Clydesdale or a Hussar. Clydesdale fires 7 guns forward (I think), and the Hussar is the best LF in the mod (at least in my opinion). So, really, since you're adverse to the Hussar, I'd pick up a Commerce Control Division Clydesdale and laugh at traders who think "Oh, it's just a freighter, how cute."

I used to fly a Hussar back in .84, I remember (foolishly) taking on Draygon in his infamous cruiser... I succeeded in incurring is wrath which half of Leeds and Dublin had to suffer since I kept CD'ing him.

The Hussar is great, but I'm not looking for a light fighter.

And are you saying there are Clydesdale Attack Wings?! I'm calling shenanigans there!
