Anyone able to play this in Vista Home Prem 32bit? - looqas - 02-26-2008

Sorry for flooding the place with my personal problems, but I strongly, very very strongly would like to be able to join the fray and RP with you guys. I made a new specific topic because the issue seems to get lost in the background static.

So if someone is playing this game online with Vista then can you tell me your

1) Firewall and it's settings
2) Antivirus setup
3) FL related stuff like where it's installed and where's the mod manager installed
4) Are you using direct connect or GLS
5) How did you get yours to work online?

etc.

A big thank you in advance who answers to this call for help.

I play this on Vista. If you are using either Norton or McAfee Security Suites, that is your problem right there (FL will never ever connect to any server with these utilities). I use AVG which works splendidly and does not interfere with FL at all. Secondly due to this wonderful thing called User Account Control, you must run FLMM and Korrd's AM as an admin (left click and select "Run as Administrator"). Then it is just a matter of allowing all FL related programs though the Windows firewall.

As far as getting online, the GLS is completely down, there is a utility that installs via FLMM that gets around the issue, but I choose to connect using the direct connect option. With Vista you must enter the command lines into the Account Manager or FLMM shortcuts as opposed to the FL one.

Where is it installed: Freelancer is at <OS Drive>/Microsoft Games/Freelancer and FLMM is installed at <OS Drive>/Freelancer Mod Manager.

Hope that answers your questions, if not let me know what you need clarified.

Thanks for the quickie. I shy away from Norton and McAfee because are really painful in most online games. I use Avast and have zero probs with it in any other online game. I shut down all the Anti virus and firewall related stuff (even stopped the background services) but still no help. I can however ping from command line the RP Disco server and it responds well. Also the ping corresponds the server listed one. I've been wondering about the GLS "hiccups" and functionality. Because about a week ago I could see the server listing but not anymore. Thanks for the heads up with that.

Can you clarify how to get direct connection to work with what utility? What do you mean UAC command lines?

I was thinking about switching UAC completely off to write off that possibility. I've ran all the stuff and even installed all the stuff as admin, but no help.

As I posted in your other topic, simply shutting them off will not do it. Either Avast or Zonealarm (or both) would need to be COMPLETELY removed. Most AV (and some security) programs rewrite portions of the registry and the only way to roll back those changes is to remove the programs with the companys' propietary removal tools.

Yep. I'm gonna try removing them completely and see it's effect. Thanks for taking your time to answer and give ideas how to solve this.

Btw. What Korrd's little thingy you meant?

That would be the account manager our Korrd came up with to allow more characters ...

Rumor: I've heard things Avast is beginning to cause problems on Vista with online gaming... Could be wrong though. Enjoy the tutorial.

Zonealarm wasn't it. Still the problem exists. Oh well, on to removing Avast. I'll keep my fingers crossed.

Ok. Now I can connect. It's sad that Avast failed me the first time in online gaming:(

Just for everybody struggling with this issue I want to tell that Avast will not work with Vista and Freelancer.

I'm migrating to AVG and see how it goes.

DBoy: You can add Avast 4.7 to the list of no-go AV software with Vista and Freelancer.

AVG is a great tool, for a freebie. The computers in my home lab haven't caught a virus yet.
