My new game engine inspired by Freelancer and Discovery. - Tytanis - 09-16-2011 Hello all, Most of you may not know me or have forgotten me, but I have been playing Freelancer and Discovery for as long as I can remember. My friend and I, way back then, decided to help Discovery by making ships and systems. About two years ago, he was in a car accident and was left brain damaged. A couple of months after the accident, I've decided to continue the project which has lead me to something greater. For the past two years, I have been coding an entirely new engine for Freelancer. The alpha stage of the engine should be complete by Q3 2013. It will feel like Freelancer but have a whole new look to it. A few features that I will announce: 100,000-200,000 triangles per ship under DirextX10 & 11 (optional) with detailed animations available. MORE equipment types. Ability to have a custom character which you can run around with inside bases and perform actions. You can also run around your own ship and control it from the bridge. Call your squadron - you can hire NPC's to act as your squadron (if paid well enough and other factors). There will be a cool-down on how many times you can use it but if you're ever in need of extra support, they'll arrive ready to fight. Run single player type missions with friends, essentially having missions with cinematic events and what-not. ^ Those are some BASIC stuff but there's a whole lot more to the engine and game play. Everything from Discovery can be imported into it and then remastered for DX10-11 goodness. This will be FREE to play. Anyways, have to pick up my son from school soon, so take care for now! Additional teasers (9/16/2011): 1,200-1,500 player slots Hireable crew members with specific and unique tasks/jobs Interior and exterior damage Hitbox detection and ship damage related dysfunctions Threat generation Achievements Faction Stock Markets Player skills Tri-monthly Olympics (races, class specific duels etc.) Ship boarding fights Additional teasers (9/18/2011): Joystick Support Auction System Minigames My new game engine inspired by Freelancer and Discovery. - Toaster - 09-16-2011 2013? But this is still at its very early stage for me to make any assumptions and comments so please keep us updated with its development. My new game engine inspired by Freelancer and Discovery. - Snak5 - 09-16-2011 If only UDK would be capable of few hundreds of players... Anyways, as I understood, you are developing the Game Engine? That is huuuge! Best of luck to you! My new game engine inspired by Freelancer and Discovery. - Tytanis - 09-16-2011 I'm back and WOW! So many replies in so little time! I'll try to answer your questions as best I can! ' Wrote:And how do you plan to intergrate the current texture/model system? As far as i know, it is highly outdated and very limited in what it can support... Any model with textures can be easily introduced into a game engine given it's within the prerequisites. The models and textures that are used now CAN be used but they can also be IMPROVED and added as well. There will be an auto-patcher that will handle these updates by the Dev Team, which would basically swap out an old model for a newer, current one. Discovery has been a power horse in keeping Freelancer alive. Without Discovery, Freelancer would probably be a "storage game". I will keep releasing teasers and updates here in this thread on the first post, so stay tuned! ' Wrote:If only UDK would be capable of few hundreds of players... At the current stage of my engine, there's enough room for at least 1,200-1,500 simultaneous connections/players. It can always be increased with network mapping to include two or more dedicated servers to perform as one. |
