One of my characters recently purchased a transport but I can't dock on any planets because they say the ship is too big. Now i have seen large ships leaving planets so I assume they dock somehow. Is there a trick to this I am missing or what?

No problem:P. It happens. Not all mods have the mooring fixtures activated.
EDIT: Nor does vanilla FL.

No point for unless you have big ships. No big ships in vanilla = no mooring fixture use.
