A brief recollection of events. - Rodent - 12-31-2011

From Walter Hurst, Historian. A perspective on the events in the Omicrons.

This is an attempt to collate and record facts of a rather obscure battle in the far Omicrons, of which rumors have reached us here on Gran Canaria. As a historian, I feel obliged to collect and record information regarding this battle, for posterity to remember and take lessons from.

This document has been created using various Order and zoner refugees that have just reached the planet in makeshift transports, as well as all records that I could obtain from Freeport 11 and Yaren base.

Details are rather sketchy, but what is known that is the the events began with Nomad and Order skirmishes in the Omicron Delta system. This initial phase of the battle seems to have lasted a few hours and ended in a decisive nomad victory.

Order survivors are adamant that The Order could have saved a lot more from the nomad attack, were it not for a simultaneously launched Core offensive on the Order home planet of Toledo.

The core fleet from all recollections seems to have been a full battlegroup, with five battleships, almost twenty cruisers and a few thousand smaller craft. Notable is the presence of troop transports among the fleet, suggesting the the Core were attempting to occupy, and not destroy.

The core attempted an encirclement tactic of Planet Toledo, and began a siege. Order forces caught in the encirclement would likely have faced enemy fire from all directions, and dealt out the same. It was a high-risk high-reward strategy adopted by the Core. This phase of the battle seems to have lasted at least four days, during which two Core battleships and a similar amount of Osiris class vessels were disabled.

What follows however is the main matter of this narrative. A Nomad fleet jumped into Omicron Minor, larger than any recorded till date. The fleet indiscriminately attacked both Core and Order assets, forcing the Core fleet into retreat.

The Order fleets around Toledo held the line for close to two days. All that time an evacuation effort from Planet Toledo was being attempted, since the Order command had agreed that it was impossible to hold the line in Toledo for an extended period.

The nomads broke through the defenses and destroyed the Isis.

It is believed that close to eight hundred thousand people were still on the Planet when the Nomads encircled it and began an orbital bombardment pattern. If the figure is true, it is one of the most appalling losses of life in Sirius in recent years.

The remnants of the Order retreated to an unknown system, while there is no record of the Nomad fleet after this action.

The following is an excerpt from one of the many briefings being given to survivors of the Toledo battle.

"...but they did. They did indeed, Rand." - Shevchenko replied quietly. He leaned closer to Rend. "Everyone here is on the edge right now. Some say the worst is yet to come. And yet I get the feeling you knew it already."

More footages followed on screens. Battles in Omicron Delta, Omicron Minor. Order clashing in fierce fight against Core in space and down the surface. Bombers high above in skies bombing ground facilities, assault transports landing. Reinforcements from Omicron-100 arriving. Nomad fleet sighted at Omicron Delta on approach. Various guncams. Back at Toledo starports the panic takes over, a crowd breaks the queue line and rushes to storm evacuation transports. Nomads, more and more of them. Rand seen a lot, but never so many. Footages continued with a quick glimpse of a Core cruiser fleeing away, followed by several smaller ships. Isis collapsing and falling apart. One after another ships were going down. A flash across the horizon, a single shot taken by one of the last ships to make out of that place.

"We don't have a full picture of what happened yet. All communications in Omicron Minor went down in a moment, the place is dead silent. A few scouts we could spare are looking for survivors and finding out... anything. Of all the populartion of Toledo only close to two hundred thousands made it out, and the number is dwindling - many are injured, critically, and we can't handle this, med bays are full. Here we try to hold up, somehow. It's worse at Akabat, that's where most were evacuated to. Transports are scheduled to take some to Zoners while there is still yet time for some, and we're having all that is left and able out here on full alert, mechanics at Evora are repairing ships that made out from the massacre, but we're running out of materials. Most of our fleet is gone. So this is where we stand, Rand. It's been a week yet, we're hearing more and more are found dead, and I can't begin to estimate our losses."

"This is just came through from one of the scouts returned from Omicron Minor."

"I will not lie, Rand. If they'll come - we're done for, but this is where we stand and we have nowhere to go anymore, this is it. I heard things are going bad all over the Sirius, and I don't know if this is coincedence or there is a method to this madness."

Dossier, Planet Akabat.

The following is classified Level Rho.

Planet Akabat was found by an Order recon team in late 816 A.S, while exploring the outskirts of what was to be the Omicron Mu system. The planet was eminently habitable, but being in the far Omicrons as it is, settlement options were not considered.

Now, Most of the Order non-essential personnel make their home on this Planet. It is rocky, with multiple underground chambers which are eminently useful. Construction of A1 through C3 has been greatly speeded up by these natural rock formations. As instructed, teams are installing explosive charges around these settlements, should the worst happen.

Construction of E4 through F7 will take a while, due to lack of proper sites, necessitating drilling into the crust to meet our requirements. The recent completion of a Docking ring has greatly improved matters.

As per orders, we're aiming to provide full evacuation facility to all facilities, in event of nomad attack. As per current estimates, we should be able to evacuate the entire population and initiate self-destruction protocols as per plan.

The planet is eminently suitable for agriculture, and several local lifeforms have been found. There are no regions which are sufficiently protected to allow us to utilise this, however. No appreciable mineral resources have been detected so far. Considering the nature of the planet, we have hopes however.

Owing to natural defensibility, C8 has been selected as primary facility. Natural rock formations have led to the creation of a massive natural cave, roughly 678 metres under the surface. We should be able to occupy most of the remaining non-essentials in roughly four weeks.

A more detailed report will be sent as we find out more.
