So, I installed 4.86 with the optional bloom pack, and have regretted it ever since.
Is there an easy way to disable this option or do I have to reinstall?

Delete d3d8.dll from your Discovery\EXE folder. That'll get rid of it completely, removing the need for Shift+F12 every time you start it.

Shift+F9 to invert bloom.

Had the same issue, thanks for the help all. Is there a chance to get this stickied? I had to dig to find this thread and I can imagine some folks have made the same mistake. <.<
