Is our generation to tech dependent? - ryoken - 03-12-2012 Pretty much as title states. Is the current generation relying, putting to much into their tech devices. Such as cell phones/tablets/Laptops/remote car gadgets/GPS and so on. Today in my city on news a woman in 30's well dumping garbage with 1 hand, talking on cell with other dropped hew cell phone down the garbage chute. Then she jumped in after it, and got stuck for hours. So it made me think. I myself think to many rely on tech. I have a basic cell phone, use for phone calls only. No text messages/no app's bla bla bla. Desktop only(excluding work laptop) And no other tech toys. Is our generation to tech dependent? - Veygaar - 03-12-2012 Yeah I agree, we are. Is our generation to tech dependent? - jammi - 03-12-2012 Right, ryoken, before you cite the Garbage Lady as a prime example of society being too technologically dependent, I just want to illustrate two things. 1) Selective reporting means only the very worst or most interesting things get reported. That means - for the most part - the 99.9999% of the population that doesn't deserve to be removed from the gene-pool with chlorine isn't mentioned. This gives the impression that whatever trait you're monitoring in the news is much more prevalent than it actually is. Further factor in that most news agencies are awful things, run by terrible people who purposefully attempt to mislead and/or sensationalise their stories; I'm look at you The Sun (UK) and ABFox (USA).
To be honest, people have asked these same questions throughout history, generally after a period of innovation. The Victorian period and the Industrial Revolution copped a fair bit of it, and led to the Luddite movement. That was people protesting about steam power, of all things. If anything, we need more technology. The less humans are involved in important things, the better.
2) Greater media exposure and people having high quality media-capture devices on them at all times ensures that incidences of stupidity are more likely to be reported now than ever before. In the 60s, you'd need a special reason to have a camcorder, ensuring most random stuff wasn't caught. Now the majority of the population has a HD camcorder in their back pocket, in the form of a mobile. Retards beware, you're being watched, and will end up on YouTube. People have always been stupid. You're just seeing more of it now. Is our generation to tech dependent? - Omicron - 03-12-2012 It's not world becoming worse. It's just your news services are becoming better.
