Yo. Been at a Manga/Anime/Book-Convention today, and also watched a Cosplay Contest. I was quite surprised at the amount of dedication these guys and girls put into their costumes, performances and all that.

I thought about it and I'd go for something like that, too, since I'm a huge Anime/Manga fan myself. Maybe at the next Convention around here.

Anyone of you a Cosplayer ? How do you get started ? I kinda' feel silly to just order a costume at ebay or something. Too bad I can't sew on my own...other options ? Any tips ?

My sister is really into cosplaying, and she usually makes some nice costumes.

I have only cosplayed once, and that was a very very simple one. I dressed up as the Engineer from Team Fortress 2... I already had the overalls and the blue shirt and the toolbelt. I bought a hard hat for like 15 bucks and made a wrench out of duct tape, so the whole outfit didn't cost more than 30 bucks total really.

I guess if you are going to get started with things like that, start small like that, something where you do not have to buy or make much. Personally I doubt I will ever make more complex costumes, I don't have the time, if I can throw together a decent looking one for cheap, I mean why not?

Well, nothing against starting out simple. It's just a matter of taste I guess. I'd go for Naruto stuff, or other Anime/Manga characters I enjoy. It's mostly not that easy to get together that sort of outfit though...

Can't you just ask tailor shops to make a costume for you ?

A lot of my friends are really into it, and I don't mind it but it's not exactly a hobby like they make it out to be.
Simple outfits can be cheap, as kikatsu said, but some of the really good ones comes with downright exorbiant prices, if bought premade.

Some of the coolest stuff I've seen recently has come from the Steampunk costuming group in my town, with some really cool modded Nerf guns and such. Last con there was even a woman with mechanical legs, that was awesome.

Well honestly the best thing to do is to get a bunch of pictures of the character you want to cosplay from as many different angles as possible. Then just hit up your local thrift store(s) and start figuring out how you can alter things.

Some sewing skills are definitley important and a fair bit of planning has to go into the costume before you even start buying stuff.

And while you can get tailors to make things for you it can get pretty expensive. Also there are tons of cosplay websites out on the internet and lots of people offer tutorials. So if you're doing a Naruto cosplay chances are someone's done it already (since Naruto is both a mainstream and a popular manga/anime) and has a tutorial out on the internet with the best way to go about doing it.

Well that's the point. I don't have sewing skills, nor a sewing machine to start with. All I can rely on is buying stuff.

Well, eBay has them pretty cheaply. For really decent ones, www.hellocosplay.com is the place to go, but their are a bit expensive. BUT, they are custom-made fore you.

Also, expect it within a month...or more...

Importing from US and stuff isn't quite good for my wallet...Q_Q

Besides, I don't use PayPal.

Neither do I. I found people that did, told them what I needed done, gave them the pictures so they knew what it looked like... and then begged and pleaded for them to give me a hand xD

I don't even know people that sew. Mgawd.
