D's AIO - DBoy1612 - 04-12-2008 So ok, as I was bored as hell this morning (finished all the usual schoolwork pretty quickly) and have had an idea on my mind. I wanted to create a Security/Performance pack of programs to pass around to friends and stuff who need them (preferably my girlfriend, as her computer is just... *shivers*). But before I say I'm done and compile it all, I wanted some opinions on some of the software I'm using. Such as if I should possibly change some of them, or if I'm forgetting something, ect ect. Anyway, in this little package of mine I have; ~ ~ ~ Protection/Security: Avast! Home Edition Currently Avast has the third largest virus database in the world, has brilliant on demand scan software, and takes a very low amount of resources. Spybot: Search and Destroy C'mon, everyones heard of Spybot. It's an award winning Spyware protection software with constant updates on any new threats around the web. Takes very low resources and space and is quite easy to use. Comodo Firewall Comodo is a free and advanced firewall, it's UI is quite simple, and it's always given me great performance and security. Peer Guardian PeerGuardian is a powerful, yet small firewall program that was especially designed for P2P users who want to protect their computers from unauthorized searches instigated by private agencies and corporations. ~ ~ ~ Utilities: Diskeeper Professional Automated and advanced deep de-fragmentation. Uses almost no resources at all as it only turns it's services on while your computer is either idle or using very little CPU. Tuneup Utilities Installing this mostly for Registry and Disk clean up, along with it's network optimizers. WinRAR File compression, simple. ~ ~ ~ Tweaks and Optimizers: WinXP Manager Found this one the other day, it's a brilliant Windows XP tweaking program. I've only so far tested the performance tweaks, and has really improved speed. Game Accelerator Well, it's not just for games, that's for sure. Game Accelerator is used to improve speed and performance in games. But after testing the program itself, it's improved the speed of my computer by at least two times then before, and that was after using all the programs I've mentioned above. ~ ~ ~ Browsing: Firefox Firefox, cmon everyone knows about Firefox. So far the most secure browser I've seen with great performance. I've included the extensions Adblock, Adblock Filter Updator, Download Status Bar, IE Tab, and Update Notifier. I've also added a program called "Firetune" which improves performance and net speed on Firefox basing off of your connection and hardware. ~ ~ ~ So yes, that's what I spent about two hours doing today, should come in handy... Opinions please?:) D's AIO - Eppy - 04-12-2008 I could use those speed uppers...a nice registry cleaner would be good, too, as mine is...um...probably worse than your Girlfriends'... D's AIO - Boss - 04-12-2008 Not WinRAR. Nuh-uh. ZipGenius is better, and handles a load more filetypes. I've used both. D's AIO - Dopamino - 04-12-2008 IZarc is even better than ZipGenius. There's almost nothing it can't decompress. Besides that, nice package Dustin! D's AIO - 13CentKiller - 04-12-2008 You forgot Windows Vista Manager Its exactly like Windows XP manager, from the same devalopers, but for Vista. Cheers:cool: D's AIO - Blodo - 04-12-2008 ' Wrote:Peer GuardianI think this one is unneeded if you have a firewall really. While it is not exactly a firewall, it does block a whole lot of stuff that you wouldn't like to be blocked (for example if you use gamespy - well, you won't be using it anymore, everything is blocked) and you have to spend hours redoing the blocklist to your own specs. The reason that that is useless in the end is that in a week there will be a new blocklist update which you will have to go through again. Also generally unless you live in America the whole danger that the corps will do anything to you is lower than the chances of dying in a plane crash really. That's just my opinion though, I'd scratch off the list unless someone is a major movie downloader. Quote:FirefoxLies. http://firefoxmyths.com/ Opera is the most secure browser and is way faster. Everything else is pretty much fine with me:P D's AIO - DBoy1612 - 04-12-2008 ' Wrote:You forgot Windows Vista Manager Package is meant for XP Machines, so won't add in stuff I won't need that takes more space. Thanks though. ^_~ D's AIO - pchwang - 04-12-2008 Can you tell me more about this game accelerator? What does it entail? Good point, suppose I'll be removing that then. (Or just keep it there just incase and only install if wanted.) It may be annoying for some, but its good for the... "Free downloaders" |
