So I decided to get a gunboat - kikatsu - 03-25-2012
But frankly... I do not know which one to get, I don't even know what I would want to do with one yet.
Normally I am partial to pirate ships because of the freedom that comes with them, and with that I admit I have been eager to try out the Corsair gunboat, but I hear they explode really easily, and frankly there are so many Corsairs as of late, I do not know if it is worth investing in that or just should keep my Titan.
I have also thought about a Hacker boat, but Liberty is awfully crowded and Hackers are not ones to engage in direct combat as much as others in the area... or..something, that could be worded better I guess.
I was also considering maybe a mercenary gunboat of some kind, maybe a Bottlenose or a Ahoudori to hunt smugglers and escort other ships around.
Or maybe a Gallic GB of some kind, I already have a GRN one so maybe a Council one?
Blah as you can see I can't really make choices too effectively... ideas guys?

the sair Gunboat is a beast... pretty good for piracy and else... it can blow easy.... if you let them blow you... is a sluggish ship, but resilient
The ahoudori is another good piece but beware, you can spit to the other side... adn you will still hitting him, the hitbox is dreadful

KuEx is flexible when it comes to ID's and it is a good ship.
Asco is good too, as you aren't afraid of creating Gallic characters.
The Imperator is a beast too with its armor and 8 turrets (with great turret hardpoint locations).
The Tridente WAS amazing, but I am fairly sure it got nerfed to death (not sure about this though).
EDIT: Also (I am sure you know) turret steering FTW! Gunboats in 4.86 are radically different to pilot compared to 4.85, but they are way better now due to turret steering. So watch out for turret arcs, they make all the difference. To be able to fire most turrets in nearly all directions is of great importance.

Hacker boat is fun to pirate with, and does have quite a punch with a CAU4. It's extremely extremely extremely easy to pew those occasional lolnavy snubs that comes around. Even the lolboats that has CAU4 or less (since most of them have no clue of how to strife). Just fit it with all hacker gunboat turrets. Or if you're an amazing sniper, three pulse three razor. ( all 6 turrets fires forward , only 4 backwar, 4 upward+downward).
When the lollabc,dread,siege arrives, just thrust/cruise away. The only problem will probably be the siege anyway, since they can thrust pretty fast, and cd you. ( I've killed many pirate boats in my all Solaris siege.) but, there aren't many siege around these days, so you should be k.
The agility is amazing, as good or even better than the Hunter Bottlenose.
Just watch out when there's more than two bombers, or a swarm of fighters, I hated that.

Having recently tried the BN and Orca I have to say... I hate them:P
I'd point you towards the Gaian Gunboat, which is very agile and I cannot simply stop loving and the Ahoudori, which is more open, packs much more firepower and looks pretty cool. Still talking pirate, the LH and LR ones are pretty ugly, stat wise tho the LR is quite fun to fly around however. Other than that, I have yet to try the Tridente, but it looks great, seems to be quite effective and there isn't many Outcasts around as there are Corsairs. (I think.)
Looking to the lawful side of things, there's the Zoner funboat, which is quite nice, the Order one, which is a heavier version of it, and the Kusari gunboat, which is the only militar issue that doesn't harm the eyes.

Take a RA-4 Rogue Gunboat. It's so fast and agile.
And if you're vet, you could even have a LR one.
Besides, I like the Tridente a lot, too.

Best recommendation is figure out what you want to accomplish then pick the ship that helps you achieve that objective.
Medium gunboats are my favorite. Liberty, Rheinland, Orca, the new IMG ship, Outcast, a couple of others. Look at +100k hull and 6-7 turrets with good coverage. Maybe wait a little while and see how the new civilian Eagle shapes up, it will probably be on the light gunship side of things but don't know yet.

Hm GBs need re-balancing and they would get it eventually in upgrade 5.
Right now all 600 k gbs are more then good, a way too good and on the other hand all 400k gbs sux- hacker gb got only 2 turrets to some sides,4 back, roug gb got 3 back , 4 to the sides, if you does not use turret steer then it is not important what you would get- but you would also die all the time to turret steerer gbs. If you use turret sterrer- tridente, orca , Asco is OP med boat- the 20 torpedo slot make it beast and some other 500k gbs are really good, best right now are corsair GB and explorer together with order gb- they got more hull and good arcs.
The posts here make me laugh hacker gb really?- this is the worst gb out there- even with the 4.86 hull and bot boost- it still sux mainly to its form and the bad turret arcs.

It all depends on how you use it, and what you use it for. kkthx.
