I can assume what the answer is for this question, but I'm surprised that I couldn't find where someone else asked about it. Regardless, I'd like to make complete certainty of it.

If you catch someone in a punishable offense, such as swearing in chat, or something else that's obvious, can you threaten to report them to the admins unless they pay you? Rather, I know the answer is no, but what would be the punishment for the person who's sending this sort of blackmail?

Sanction the former for breaking rules, sanction the latter for interpreting. Check server rules, its in there.

And the latter is usually the worst bastard, imho.

Quote:Server Rule 3.5 Attempts to pose as admins, threatening players with sanctions, attempts to interpret rules are not allowed. Applying to admin's name without prior consent of the admin is not allowed.
Punishment for it? Admins' discretion. Probably unspeakably painful.
Don't do it. If someone does it to you, screenshot their demand and report them.

[rant]Reminds me of the time I undocked from Freeport 2 (is that right? Its in Bering...) on my Zoner character, and moments later, 2 Xeno's undocked from the same base, then proceeded to murder me. I respawn, undock, and watch them redock on the same base..GOD Those kind of people piss me off... But not as much as the people who have the BALLS to threaten people....[/rant]

sometimes a trader will F1 on me, If they come back and I'm not busy I tell them that F1ing is sanctionable but if they apologize I'll offer to let us continue where we were before the F1. Not a threaten so much as "I don't want to fill out sanction threads but I want you to know that it's still wrong".

Should I stop doing this?

That seems okay, as the whole point of sanctions is a deterrent... if it works, fine, and since its hard to prove f1 unless you plan on it is probably for the best sometimes. Threatening report with a demand isn't, as Xoria said and as the rules clarify.

In my option, No.
Thats a nice and polite way of informing them that Hey, thats's wrong.

I understand not rule lawyering over system. But in all honesty i would rather tell somone what they have done wrong over a friendly PM. Not everyone automaticly remembers every single rule. I think there would be less sanctions from new players if people on the server gave a little guidance. Rather than straight to the sanction thread.

Now blackmail.<< That should be a sanction in its self. I think people forget who the Admins are. Fair enough showing people the error of thiere ways. But actually trying to gain credits from people Not very sporting now is it.

I agree. Blackmail is reprehensible in any situation. People do make mistakes and sometimes a friendly reminder is all that is needed to assist them. I'm very aggressive in my RP, but I feel that a bit of restraint and education can go a long way toward promoting an atmosphere that is enjoyable for all players. Yes, we are responsible to know and abide by the server rules, yes we should read regularly to insure that we have the latest understanding. However we do benefit when we look out for one another. There will be the odd "butthead" out there and that cannot be helped. They'll be dealt with on a case by case basis, via the Admins.
