Mount and Blade: Napoleonic Wars - kikatsu - 05-07-2012

A while ago I heard of this game from a few friends of mine, Mount and Blade, a third person fighting and army managing kind of game. I did not think much of it at the time, tried the demo out, I sort of got into it, I had fun. Around the same time I was trying out the demo I heard of an expansion pack for it called Napoleonic Wars, and I got to say I am surprised with how fun that is.

Napoleonic Wars, simply put, is a massive multiplayer third person shooter, normal matches having about 200 people in them. As the title may suggest it takes place in the early 1800s during the time where a coalition of nations formed to oppose Napoleon's rapidly expanding French Empire.

Given the kind of shooters we have today, you may not think it sounds interesting to fight each other with muskets and carbines. Well the guns in the game have horrible accuracy and take upwards of probably 15 seconds to reload it, during which you cannot move. If you were alone in this it may suck but when you have a line of 50-100 guys with you and you all fire your guns at once it is pretty amazing, plus it is really a neat race that the lines can get into, seeing who can reload the fastest and fire again. You can of course run up and knife the other guy with your bayonet if you think you can get close enough before he reloads. Battle mode has to be the most entertaining, as you only get one life in it.

There are a ton of classes as well, besides the standard musket wielding line man there are things like officers with spy glasses and sabres, combat engineers and sappers to build entrenchments and destroy the enemy's, cavalry, cannon operators and rocket men, and of course musicians:P

So far the game has totally been worth the price, I am loving it. There are bugs, and it is obviously a low budget title, but worth it I think.

My favorite mod was native expansion, though I played it on earlier versions of M&B...1.013 for example

Try going into the options menu, the one that comes up when you start the game, not the game itself and switch it to the version of DirectX that is not currently highlighted. I swapped that on a whim and my performance went from 10 FPS to 34.

The best addition. Was the ability for musicians to march while they played. Take that Artillery Position. You cannot handle the full power of a bearded bagpiper coming for your souls playing the death march.

Ah, I have to get this one. I've got all the others. Have they improved the combat balance on With Fire and Sword? I remember that one being terribly imbalanced and such.
