So last night I was flying my pirate character, "bloodsail". He's got a rogue gunboat, six solaris gunboat turrets, a rogue tag, and generic pirate ID.

As I undocked from buffalo, I see a red target on scanners. He had a police tag, and once I closed the distance I saw he was flying an advanced train.

The mistake I made here was that I didnt scan to see what ID he had, and I should have. I hit him with a couple train CD's and asked twice in system chat what his reason for being in the badlands, so close to buffalo base (he was about 8k from the base) was. He did not respond, and just kept trying to engage his cruise.

It was quite clear that he was hostile to my factions. He was red IFF'd, and all the rogue and outcast npcs in the area were gunning at him. My guess is that he was coming from the texas -> new york jump hole as a shortcut on his trade route. After no response from him, I killed him, we'll say to keep buffalo's location secure, but primarily because he was a hostile target in what is considered rogue space.

Normally I dont kill a trader without asking for cargo or money first, but since I wasnt actively pirating at the time (this happened close to home, not out on some distant trade lane) I considered my actions more rogue-ish, in defense of their space from an unknown intruder.

After killing him, I tractored in some of the loot. I didnt get much, but he was carrying a mix of niobium and some random stuff. Nothing illegal and nothing that would be considered contraband... so why was he flying through very much hostile space when he could have been taking the gate and trade lanes?

Just want some confirmation that I was in the right here and wasnt breaking any rules without cause. I never got any chat out of him, he didnt respond before death and after he died it said "player left", never saw him come back. poor bugger, hope i didnt scare him off...

I'd demand cargo next time, just in case. Or credits. "Fine him" for going so close to your base.

Also, the Texas->NY jumphole isn't much of a shortcut. >_>

regarding to the rules - you should have scanned for his ID. - since the tag and the matter that he was red means nothing in terms of the RP rules. ( cheshire got blown up by an IMG battlecruiser the other day - the IMG said ( afterwards ) that i appeared red on his HUD. - i had to tell him that this issue was all on his side, cause he appeared to be unfriendly to the BHG guards - and he did not read the tag, nor did he scan for the ID )

if he had been a trader ID, you d have to ask him for tax in any shape or form. - no matter how wrong he was to be there. - cause thats another issue. ( its like the corsairs and traders with passengers that are heading to crete. - if they were free to "defend" their place from those traders, they d be allowed to blow them up in battleships. - but since the pirating rules apply, they must not attack in anything bigger than a gunboat and MUST ask for a tax )

so from what i resume, you did 2 mistakes ( you did not scan or confirm his ID and you destroyed him without asking for a tax )

while he prolly did mistakes, too. ( police tag with most probably no police ID - allthough no one knows; and travalling through rather unlikely space )

I believe you still broke a rule for killing a trader without demanding credits or cargo.

Even if they were being stupid, unless they miraculously had some non-trader/smuggler ID, then yeah, its against rules. Much to my dismay.

The same can be said for going through Chugoku, any trader caught there should get killed to protect the secret...

Guess ill be more careful next time. Could have been avoided if he'd have responded on system chat =/

They do that. Just demand he drop all cargo or be destroyed. Since they'll never do that, kill him.

What you did is fully sanctionable. He has a full right to report you after that and if I were you I wouldn't put it around here in public for your own sake.

A tip when pirating. If your target never stops trying to reenter cruise and also doesn't even chat back to you at all, just type quickly, 2mil or die or an equivilant into the system chat then take him down. I run into people like his in Kusari all the time. If they don't give me the time to give them an RP-styled pirating line, I just give them te generic one and take them out.
