It's nothing new, I've known plenty of Canadians on teh internetz. Canadians and Australians are some of the most fun people for relaxed gaming. However they don't play freelancer much; freelancer's played a lot by russians and germans.
But it's good to have some here as well.

I've met both Australians and Canadians on the internets on different communities.
They are very interesting people, who often make me laugh the most.
