' Wrote:Jump Drives are far from prototypes. Travel before jump gates was done primarily by Jump Drives that moves a ship at an extreme speed for small distances. They were extremely delicate, and a malfunctioning jump drive could cause an entire ship to explode.
Jump Gates were developed by the Coalition right after the betrayal that was the Balma Treaty. They were used in tandem with cloaking devices, also developed by the Coalition, to move truckloads of small fighters and bombers within Alliance Defensive Lines and obliterate them from behind. In essence, Jump Gates have formed what Freelancer is today.
The first Jump Gates weren't nearly as powerful as the ones of Freelancer. In Starlancer, the one you encountered was only capable of opening a small worm-hole from Venus to Saturn.
After a while, the Alliance managed to develop personal jump gates onto their ships that were capable of moving a ship from planet to planet via worm-hole. It wasn't as great as Jump Gates, but they worked really well in comparison to Jump Drives, which were only capable of functioning for very small lapses of time...
Every ship is capable of being equipped with a Jump Drive. They're fun little devices that are implemented right inside the engines. Fun little things, they are. Fun little things......
You know, I've been doing some timing and quick number crunching (not very accurate due to freelancers horrible scaling) and I think that cruise engines are almost as fast if not faster than the old jump drives.
But what happened to the warp drives? hundreds of years latter you'd think they would of optimized on the technologies. (A conspiracy by the makers of trade lanes anyone?)
Claw put it almost exactly right, except for a few things. There were no JH in Texas at ALL before the Texas Incident. There was also no dark matter. what happened was, they were testing a new experimental long-rage JG that wold allow them to leave Sirius and have access to other parts of the galaxy. But there was an unexpected dark matter surge, which caused the destruction of half the system, the dark matter that caused it became the 2 clouds. And the explosion created the JH to California, New York, Puerto Rico, and whatever other JH there are in that system.

Well they can leave Sirius anyway, just need to make a bridge through a few systems. Much like how the Houses etc expanded. After all it's not as if the galaxy specifically makes set numbers of systems per sector. A sector that was defined by humans especially.
Sirius is simple a small piece of a giant galaxy picture. The borders defined by ourselves. The actual borders being limitless.
Jump drives were too big to fit in smaller ships than the Osiris 15 years ago in our storyline. By now I'd say they might've at least produced more ships with them in it or simply the drives themselves, instead of simply a prototype.
I'd say those with the right connections or the right credit numbers could get ahold of one for their ship in RP.
The Liberty Military would also see the value of them for their carriers. A single battleship is vulnerable even in RP but a carrier is essentially a mobile base. Far better to jump one of those into enemy territory and send out attack squads than jump a battleship in and have the roll the lumbering beast into their forces.
Slight diverge from the original topic but Jump drives on select ships would be a brilliant addition and increase RP oppertunities by a hell of a lot.
