The problem is I am slow at typing so after getting blown to oblivion by a few unpatient pirates mid sentence, I decided to stop doing it. Not only that but it did seem kind of silly. As far as War Ships go I honestly think introducing yourself with the first line should be enough.

hegemon is huge, no reason not to have a cap'n

as for pirate encounters, it's either "her's my moneys", immediate start firing your guns, or die trying to roleplay.

No atmosphere? GTFO.

Oh yeah, that's another thing.

Why would the name of someone commanding/doing comms for a capital vessel be announced to potential pirates or terrorists?

I sure wouldn't want a Rogue to know my name and find my family.

A substantial number of (indie) people roleplay a ship that shoots things. They roleplay themselves flying a ship in a game. In other words, they don't roleplay. For me, putting a name there or otherwise acknowledging that they are a person rather than a ship at least lets me know that they're willing to roleplay at all.

This is the reason why I'd feel more comfortable with a person who puts their name before a message.

Whenever I fly caps I always put a name infront my messages. For example if i'm flying the LPI shared dread then I do it so people know who's flying it. If I'm flying my LABC then I do it just because it looks far better than not doing it. Plus it's now second nature to me.

* True, the Hegemon is big enough to be manned by a crew. When I passed other transports in the trade lane I put the name of my Captain in the text a few times. (When I remembered too) However as I said before it just seemed a little silly and unnecessary. For one, unless the other ship already has a crew manifest of your ship they are not going to know who is speaking until you introduce yourself anyways.

"Greetings, this is (Rank)(Name) of the (Ship or Faction if in fighter)"

Secondly, this should always be enough. Typing a name after you introduce yourself just seems like a waste of time. Also I agree that the Captain does not have to introduce himself if he/she feels that the situation does not warrant it.

*On the pirates (and by the way this is not all pirates, I have ran into a few with cool and fun RP) again I just don't think introducing myself is necessary when I feel that they are not going to care.

Quote:I usually go for the following when roleplaying in a ship where the commander is not specified through the shipname:

RNC-Blablub: This is Blablub control, captain Whatever speaking, we're on our way to grid G4 in the system, blablablablabla.

Which means that I don't write the speaking persons name before every single message, but rather introduce them when they speak, or using symbols to let the others know that *the woman that I introduced or let herself introduce raises her voice*.

I do this as well, and I think it works better, especially since the person receiving the transmission would otherwise have no idea what my captain's name was.
