Was this taken out? I have been doing outcast missions in Eta and haven't seen these drop anymore. Was this intentional or accidental because that was my main source of income and it was even fair as it was high risk, high reward (with expensive repairs too).
Another thing i want to bring up would be the ammo tractoring bug. I know this bug was posted in another thread but i want to bring it back up because selling ammo was also a decent way to make money. Whenever i did gunboat missions, before i got my dreadnought, that was essentially one of the main sources of income from those missions.
I dont think having trading as the only way to make a good amount of money in this game is that great of an idea.
I earned a lot of money doing missions in Eta with Legate. Billions literally in no time. I usually picked up highest level missions, over 5 millions and always worked solo. Over 20 mills per mission and no more than 10 minutes from start to dock, that is around 250 mill in two hours (more than with mining and barge jumping). Here is the video where I sell drops (as a proof).
I agree that missions in 4.86 were too easy (at least Corsair ones) and that profit was too high but now you can't earn more than 8 mills per one. I think that they could be buffed a little.
Regarding player interactions while doing missions, I can say that no one ever tried to attack or to RP with me.
Like there was unwritten rule that when someone is in Eta everybody will leave you alone to do your thing.

Now that I think about it, just recently I was playing with some other indies in my LNS char in Minnesota, and we encountered a Rhein BS there. I honestly intended to go up there and communicate with him, but I saw he was being attacked by some LN NPC ships, which kinda discouraged me out of some unwritten principle. (also partly because we had our own mission to get to, and when 3 Rheinland BS NPC's suddenly pop up as mission objectives you just suddenly go, "HOLY ****" rather than communicate with someone)
Because all of us know... Anti-cap missions are ****ing hard as hell, especially if you're doing the 40+ level missions on your own.
