Currently the copy of BB tables that we've got implemented is a bit rubbish. It's lacking a lot of basic features that are pretty much standard everywhere else - th/table headers aren't recognised, and col/rowspan can't be used.

I'd recommend looking into other plugins that perhaps provide a more rounded feature list. Maybe this if it's compatible. I forget which forum software we're using now. vBulletin might be compatible with myBB, might not be.
