As far as I know it's a feature from vanilla freelancer that indicated patrol routes of enemy factions. Such patrol routes can also be found on your nav map if you select "patrols" I believe it was. And if it's hostile it will warn you with said "Trail"

Think of it as this: The "Oh an enemy has locked onto my ship" alert, this is usually NPC's
Its a sign to show that basically that NPC's either have broken off their patrol route or whatever, and have you "Locked On"

When I was playing, I noticed when it was npcs BEHIND you - that were mainly targetting you as well.
