E PLURIBUS UNUM

Boardroom 11, Doe Industries Space Port

Rangi and his team arrived early to set up the next hours events, nothing seemed to be any different than the last time he set the place up. Always the boring parts first thing. As the team we arranging data pads at each seat, the first of the potential contractors showed up. He was less than pleasant, an odor emitted from him that clearly shouldn't have been. As one of the new younger interns tried to hide her dry retching, Rangi himself couldn't resist the urge to react offensively. Clearly this guy shouldn't be here Rangi thought to himself and as he went to introduce himself and see if he can get this walking mess out.
Before he could say anything, the new entrant abruptly put his hand up and said "I know, I know... just, point me to the nearest bathroom facilities". Rangi instructed the puking young intern to take him down, as a mild punishment for her lack of professionalism.

By the time they returned, the others had begun arriving. By this stage the intern had learned this guy's name was Jorge and owned a small fleet of ships, struggling to get on the market and with the recent spike in fuel costs, he had been struggling to afford the repayments. He took a seat and the intern rejoined the rest of her team, mildly annoyed with the sneers she was getting as she returned.

After an hour's introductions and explanations of what was on offer, the trader pilots left, mostly upset at what seemed to be an apparent underwhelming offer. But one trader left last, and slowly but awkwardly made his way over to the once helpful intern. He had been disappointed by what was on offer, but he also wasn't ready to give up at least some work, He called out, grabbed her attention and she wandered over.

He asked her if there was room for negotiation, if there was some other thing they can manage to help him out. He implored the idea that he had no other option and pulled his finest bargaining tricks out of the bag unto which the intern reluctantly agreed to talk to her bosses. She was nervous about it, skeptical even as she knew Rangi was a yes or no man, there was little room for leniency with him. She felt for this guy, but she considered was it worth the embarrassment of getting rejected. She left Jorge there and headed towards where Rangi was writing out some paper work.

"Mr Hemopo, may I have a moment?" She queried as his head was buried in his task at hand. "what is it?" Rangi replied. "There's one freelancer here who wants to negotiate and work something out, I think you should listen to him" Rangi stops tapping away on his datapad and looks up at her, about to berate any notion she should be telling him what to do when he pauses a moment, looks at his datapad and then looks and the intern again. "What's your name again?" A bit embarrassed and actually annoyed by the randomness of the question, she replies in a stutter; "Ch-Ch-Cherry Baxter, Mr Hemopo"
Sarcastically, Rangi retorts "Right Ch-Ch-Cherry, if you think you have what it takes to make suggestions then I guess you're ready to wear the grown up pants. Go and arrange a deal that works for me. You don't have what I want in fifteen minutes, you're on mail run for the rest of the month" Cherry is stunned for a moment, unable to reply. She utters out a "But" however Rangi points at Jorge and simply says "Go, now" and buries his head back into his paperwork.

Cherry begins discussing what he wants right away, and Jorge tells her he's prepared to get paid lowly, so long that he can make the repayments back on the ships. He believes he owes the other captains a job and regular wages as that was the reason they joined him. Three ships, one under repair. Three pilots with families to feed. Times were tough and Jorge needed to find a solution first. They discuss a bit more about what he needs and how much Doe was willing to pay. An agreement couldn't be reached and both were starting to get desperate. One needed the money, one couldn't spend it. Twenty minutes later Rangi comes over and interupts "You got something yet, Chi Chi?" The look on Cherry's face said it all, and Jorge noticed it right away. He kept his mouth shut as Cherry struggled to cope with her bully of a boss. "No, Mr Hemopo, we haven't yet. We can't seem to find a resolution..." Rangi wasn't impressed, and instructed Cherry back to work and civilly told Jorge to leave.

Defeated and annoyed, Cherry thought that there had to be some kind of compromise. She carried on cleaning up with the rest of the team, dealing with the snide remarks her colleagues were whispering behind her.
