Couldn't you guys have just, y'know, answered questions on the forum with considerably less effort on both your part and on the part of the participants?

A way a lone a last a loved a long the riverrun, past Eve and Adam's, from swerve of shore to bend of bay,
brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs.

Answering that question is not on the scope of the AMA.

So I think this is a pretty valid question. From my perspective, at least, there are multiple reasons for not having done this. I'll try to give a decent summation here.

1. Personability

We wanted to go out and actually present ourselves as people, not just names on a screen, to the community. Allowing people to engage with us not just via text but to hear us talk amongst ourselves as developers (and I do get that this is only relevant to second half of the AMA, but bear with me), should hopefully give people the sense that we're individuals who communicate with each other with our own thoughts, ideas, and perspectives. I think a lot of people see "dev" as either a hivemind or a single person who the other golds kowtow to. Both of these are misconceptions that I'm really hoping this AMA gets people to reevaluate, and in general see us as a little more personable and not just a monolithic entity.

2. Remaining on topic

This is a big one for me. I know that if this had taken place on the forums, we would have had a lot of derailing going on even with heavy moderation and even with the staff themselves remaining on topic. The forums are just what they say on the tin - a forum. They allow everyone's voice to be heard. What we were attempting to do was engage with the community, rather than falling into a multitude of side conversations. The platform we chose allowed us to facilitate a clear and direct line of communication between us and our playerbase.

3. Real time chat

Since we opted for a livestream as our AMA format, this meant people could engage with us in real time and hold a dialogue with us in a more fluid format that we would not otherwise have had the opportunity to participate in. While there was no way that we could possibly respond to everyone's questions or comments, this at least gave us a chance to engage with the community en masse in a streamlined way which we rarely have the ability to. I know some people are going to say "Discord!", but again, the first two points I made here tend to diminish the quality of Discord conversations as well.

I hope this helps to answer your question. I do in conclusion want to say that we didn't consider this to be too much effort, and look forward to doing this again in the future.

That and it was just more fun to do.
And without it, you could not now read every single post made by @Unseelie in his creamy voice.

Any chance on a follow up after the Gallic war has concluded this month?
