A long time ago I recall there being an image catalogue of all of the props Freelancer has defined for use on base NPCs. Props can be added to base NPCs through the mBases.ini file found in the \DATA\MISSIONS\ directory.

Not all props seem to work properly for all NPCs - there's a degree of trial and error involved. In order to actually add an item, use mBases.ini to locate the statblock for the NPC you are interested in. It'll look something like this:

At the bottom of this block add:

Accessory = prop_name_from_table_below

Props are attached to predefined hardpoints on the NPC's body model. Due to this, there are many male and female variants of certain props which are hardpointed to avoid clipping and other strange issues with gendered character idle animations.

You can give an NPC multiple props by using separate accessory = lines. Props can be assigned to the same slots, which will result in them clipping through each other, i.e. a character could wear multiple helmets at once but it would look silly.
