Prefix tags are useful when you're in-game and trying to sort the player list by name. Then all members of a tagged faction will appear next to each other.

Thunderer mentioned the tag password mechanic, although I think it's fairly uncommon for someone to want to affiliate with a faction uninvited.

A way a lone a last a loved a long the riverrun, past Eve and Adam's, from swerve of shore to bend of bay,
brings us by a commodius vicus of recirculation back to Howth Castle and Environs.

Factions with unprotected tags are uncommon, too. TBH is one of them and I've heard from Pepe that they once had a problem with that.

Ironically I used to get invited by Aoi due to one of my ships actually possessing |Aoi in the ship name despite not actually being part of the faction

fun times

I don't think this is true

Prefix tags are far superior in their elegance, tidiness and ease of identification. So, I guess my opinion flows swiftly into the mainstream on this one.

Has to be Prefiix for me personally - [Clan/Faction identification][Name/Callsign] Just seems more professional in my opinion from a Roleplay standpoint!
