I've been browsing through the older posts on this forum and come by some good discussion on the problems related to having a valid RP experience on this server. There is a fundamental conflict in modifying Freelander into a faction war. The original game was all about riding the fence and making enemies of no one. A single player character was a god amongst squabbling NPC factions. One who could move in and out of any territory going wherever the money took him. It was stupid with that version of the game to lock oneself down to any one faction.
There are 2 things I think would draw people into RP more:
1)abolish neutrality for any character leaving NY-reguardless of level. If they want to be neutral, they have to stay in NY, but in order to get access to the rest of the system, they have to pick a side. NY could then be a true neutral zone-which is has to be as it is in the middle of everything.
2)balance the trade interests of all the factions absolutely. This means that all the corporations would have just as valuable a trade interest as the major houses and pirate factions. Currently if you want to carry a corporate ID, there's little for you to do except fly around and get shot at by pirates.
I realise the consequences of such a change. But it would equalize the disparity between pirating/policing and trading (trading is so much more profitable than pirating or policing theres really no reason to be a pirate or police or military other than to blow stuff up.)

Some good points but! Would be much easier to install a FIRST SHOT SYSTEM. Stay white with everyone until a battle ensues, That way you can maintain neutral status with whatever faction while fighting with that segment that was trying to engage you. To put it more plainly, if you dont want to piss off a whole faction while you defend yourself then dont fire first.

I see what you are saying, was not thinking of that aspect of it. I was thinking of the scanning thing... Like I have noticed that when I come across a pirate ship that I am white with they scan me. If my cargo hold is empty they leave me alone if I got some loot they come after me. So yes it would only work for the ... I think you call them "NPC" ships. oh well
