And so shall they fall, all who bear our mark. No matter who they are, no rank, nor title, nor power shall shield them. When the mark finds them, their time is nigh.

Okay, with the current dispositions, assuming everyone can make it in-game, HRZ gets two respawns.

A key indication of combat readiness of any force is its ability to rapidly deploy effective strike groups according to the needs of the engagement. When this ability is hampered, an otherwise elite force may begin to look incompetent, even if the truth is of a more complex nature. The separatist movement first detected by the Direktorat had been larger in scope than anticipated. Perhaps more effective interrogation methods may have yielded a more complete picture, but on the day of the prisoner transfer, multiple individuals continued to escape detection and had the ability to cause further havoc. Their actions on this day, while critical in hampering the Unioner response, put all involved in great peril, and likely into the clutches of GEIST.

At Krefeld Base, the refueling apparatus of one of the main hangars was sabotaged, resulting in a jury-rig operation cobbled together by the engineering team on standby. Such a design, while ingenious within the time allowed, did not possess the necessary capacity to support multiple ships. Additionally, an unidentified reactor tech attempted to perform a electrical shutdown of one of the main reactor banks in response to the same go signal that reached the strike wing. While ultimately unsuccessful, the station administrator called for a staggered cycling of all reactors to ensure their continued safe operation, which slowed the hangar repair teams. As a result, only a single fighter was scrambled from the base.

With the Red Hessian signals officer on duty at Vogtland being unwilling to use Hessian pilots for the operation, a small delay occurred as the message was transmitted to Ithaca via Northheim. Additionally, due to the vagaries of the privateer life, only a small number of vessels was available for a rapid strike group, though their pilots were eager to engage.

The Rheinwehr escort, under nominal command of Bootsmann Beist, proceeded to split up in Steinfurt orbit. Fighters were sent to the Stuttgart and Dresden jump holes, as the jump gate was immediately discarded as an option. As soon as HRZ ships were detected near the Stuttgart jump hole, the transport and the rest of the escorts were ordered to proceed via Dresden. However, the jump drive malfunction on the transport allowed both the HRZ vessels and the lone Unioner pilot to catch up to their target immediately inside Dresden.

With the transport immediately making a run for it, there was only a small window within which it could have been disrupted. While one of the HRZ fighters managed this at first, the pressure from three of the escorts forced it to perform evasive maneuvers, therefore reducing the effectiveness of further disruptions. The other two fighters were delayed by having to split up during the approach, and one of these was disrupted by Beist, forcing it into the engagement. The last fighter, deciding that a fully armored transport along with an escort would be a tough nut to crack, decided to stay and help its comrades. As the engagement began in earnest, the Unioner ship appeared, and upon assessing the situation, decided to engage the hated Rheinwehr ships, which could have been dealt with so easily with a full-strength strike group.

The nominally even odds were still in the Rheinwehr's favor, as its pilots were part of the same team and maintained effective communications. Unbeknownst to Beist, one of his wingmen turned out to be an ace on the controls, which further improved the escort's combat capability. In a brief but hard-fought engagement, the HRZ ships soon sustained considerable damage, and chose to retreat. The Unioner pilot stayed and kept the Rheinwehr force busy while the HRZ regrouped for another attack. Meanwhile, the prisoner transport proceeded alone towards the system center (having released its escort back into the fray), and then through the hole in the minefield, wisely warning the blockading force of its intentions ahead of time on the emergency frequencies. As this transmission reached the remainder of the fighters in the system, the pirates and the Unioner ship continued to fight for a little longer to satisfy their honor, but eventually retreated back to their respective bases, all involved sustaining heavy damage. The Rheinwehr escorting force, having completed its objective, set a course for New Berlin to return to base and celebrate its well-fought victory.

With the separatists under interrogation in luxury rooms purchased with their own bribe money, the Rheinwehr would be able to extract any useful information they possessed. However, with the Unioner Direktorat aware of the identities of all conspirators, a lot of information acquired in this manner would soon be outdated. While the pilots involved would never receive official recognition of their success, their reputation may have went up a notch in the eyes of the Oberkommando, with the possibility of future clandestine missions on the horizon.
