Basic Information

Name: Section-17
ID/IFF: LSF ID / Freelancer or LSF IFF - depending on situation
Faction Tag: <S-17>

The Liberty Security Force stands as the official guardian of the house, a bulwark against the tide of piracy, smuggling, and foreign aggression that threatens the citizens of Liberty. Its agents are publicly lauded as heroes, its directives are matters of public record, and its mandate is clear: to uphold the rule of law and protect the Liberty way of life. They are the shield, the visible and unwavering line drawn against the darkness of the Border Worlds and beyond.

The Nomad War taught the LSF a lesson that could not be entered into the public record. The enemy was not only a fleet to be fought, nor a criminal to be tried. It was an infection, a biological horror that conventional tactics could not defeat. A shield is useless against a plague that rots you from within. The near-assimilation of President Jacobi was not just a close call; it was a terrifying revelation that Liberty's survival could not be entrusted to conventional fleets and noble soldiers alone.

A sharper, more ruthless instrument was required. This instrument is Section-17. The authorization for Section-17's existence was signed in the dead of night, a ghost decree born from the ashes of the Nomad coup around Sirius - kidnapping President Jacobi. Known to fewer than a dozen individuals outside its own ranks, Section-17 is the LSF's black knife, an answer to a question its leadership is terrified to ask publicly. It answers to no one but a select shadow council within the highest echelons of the Liberty government, its funding siphoned through dozens of untraceable shell corporations and classified military budgets. Its primary research and command nexus is not on any planet, but in a state-of-the-art station known only as 'The Penumbra', hidden in plain sight, disguised as a Weather Station for Planet Manhattan.

Under the direct, unyielding command of its First-in-Command, Layla Rose, Section-17 operates under a grim dual mandate. Their main directive is to research and fire-probe new technologies built on 'The Penumbra' - experimental weapons, scraped AI modules, and biological augmentations far too dangerous for standard military trials. This structure allows official Liberty forces to eventually profit from their work, reverse-engineering sanitized versions of their breakthroughs, while Section-17 bears the full cost of failure and experimentation, may it be in soul or blood. Their ultimate objective, using these forbidden tools, remains the complete and utter extermination of the Nomad species.

This singular focus also dictates their approach to diplomacy: any group, be they pirate, corporate entity, or even a foreign power, that shares their goal of Nomad eradication is a potential, if temporary, ally. Conventional house loyalties and political rivalries are meaningless in the face of their crusade; the only allegiance that matters is the one forged in shared hatred for the alien threat.

The operatives of Section-17 are phantoms. They leave no records and fly no house colors. When a Nomad hive in the deepest reaches of the Edge Worlds goes silent it is often their unseen hand at work. But in their singular focus to destroy the alien threat, these agents walk a razor's edge. To fight the monsters, they are becoming monsters themselves, and no one truly knows what will be left of their humanity - biological and psychological - once their war is won.
