Subject: Bulwark acquisition

Dear Sales Representatives of Bristol Construction and Manufacturing,

My name is Hermann Schmidt, captain with Orbital Spa & Cruise and regional manager for Baden Baden.
I am reaching out regarding the possible purchase of one of your Bulwark-class vessels.

I am aware that my director, Frau C. Cross, has previously contacted you with the proposal of converting a Bulwark into a passenger liner. I fully understand that the idea of transforming a vessel originally designed to be sturdy, utilitarian, and exploratory into some sort of cruise ship may have seemed — if I may say so — rather eccentric. Frankly, I found your negative response at the time to be far more polite than the proposal truly deserved.

My own interest, however, lies in something quite different: I would like to acquire a Bulwark in the very form in which it was conceived — a resilient, self-sustaining platform capable of prolonged operations and exploration even in the most demanding systems.

Should you be open to such a sale, I would kindly ask for a quotation as well as clarification on the following matters:

1) Estimated production and delivery times;
2) Capacity to carry Plover-class shuttles;
3) Long-range communication capabilities;
4) Minimum crew complement required for full operations.

I look forward to your reply and, in the meantime, wish you a pleasant weekend.

Unsere herzlichsten Grüße,
Hermann Schmidt

Good afternoon Mr Schmidt,

My name is August Molitor, Director for the Financial Department here at Akutan Production Facility in Bering, and I will be taking over this communication.

I would agree, in looking back through the prior communications it was an interesting idea - novel would be the politest way - to convert a Bulwark-class Heavy Explorer into a cruise liner and I would agree with Ms Wheeler that the whole of the project was ill-advised. I appreciate that you see the vessel as what it says on the box, to give that Libertonian turn of phrase: The Bulwark is the premier vessel for edgeworlds endeavors, Omicron transportation, and high-risk shipping throughout the sector and beyond into Gallia.

To answer your questions…
1) We currently have a Bulwark-class Heavy Explorer ready for sale.
2) Carrying capacity is one (1) Docking Module, able to carry one (1) Plover-class Shuttle.
3) Capability to uplink with Zoner satellites, Trade Lane networks, and Jump Gate network.
4) Minimum crew requirement of 95 for sustained operations.

I would ask, though, on your reasoning to operate such a vessel as this. To my knowledge, Orbital Spa & Cruise does not have much of the deep space infrastructure that this sort would generally be utilized to support, nor does it have exploratory goals in mind that the Bulwark-class is generally suited towards.

I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Dear Mr. Molitor,

Allow me to thank you in advance for your kind attention and for considering my proposal. I will do my best to address any possible doubts you may have.

It is true that Orbital Spa & Cruise is not the first name one thinks of when it comes to exploration and remote frontiers. Yet among our clients there is a growing demand for experiences that convey the thrill of adventure and the unknown. As a leading company in our field, we feel it is our duty to meet these expectations.

The difficulty lies in the fact that the tours currently offered by our “adventure division” are increasingly regarded as too mild, too little “exotic”. We have already faced situations where guests attempted, with more or less success, to persuade our captains into unscheduled detours—with all the risks such diversions entail. We have tried to counter this by strengthening our ships and increasing escorts, yet the margin of danger remains significant. Even our ill-fated interest in converting your Bulwark-class vessels into liners stems from the need to address this issue.

The solution we envisage, so, takes a different approach: to provide our clients with the experience of exploration—thrilling, yet secure and carefully managed. In practice, the actual groundwork of exploring would be carried out in advance by a specialised vessel, capable of long-term autonomous operations, resilient against hostile conditions, and able to chart and document entire regions in depth. Upon its return, the data collected would allow us to establish safe and reliable routes to new destinations, where our guests could feel as though they were among the first explorers—while in reality moving through environments already mapped, catalogued, and "secured". Thus, the sense of adventure remains vivid and genuine for our clients, but without exposing lives or corporate assets to unnecessary risk.

And what better candidate than your Bulwark? There are indeed vessels on the market that might appear, at first glance, to be suited to such a task—but none provides a complete set of capabilities. If they are resilient enough, they lack the ability to carry snubcraft. If they can carry snubcraft, their autonomy is too limited. And if they offer both, they often fall short in durability. The Bulwark, by contrast, combines endurance, autonomy, and versatility in a way no other design can. The reputation of your engineering, moreover, extends well beyond the boundaries of your usual sphere of operations.

You might ask: why not entrust such tasks to third-party contractors? The answer is simple. Our most valuable asset is not our liners or our resorts, but our clients themselves. And while profit is, of course, a driving factor, we cannot entrust their safety to outsiders. We firmly believe this responsibility must remain in our own hands—and for this mission, only your vessel can fully meet the requirements.

I trust this clarifies our intentions, and I look forward to your reply. Should your answer be favourable, I shall await your instructions regarding payment and delivery.

Unsere herzlichsten Grüße,
Hermann Schmidt

Good afternoon Mr Schmidt,

Thank you for your prompt response. Your position has most certainly been clarified for us, and after some discussion with Ms Chellew of the Engineering Department here I can say that your proposal does hold a good amount of merit.

The cost for a base hull is 15.000.000 cr, transferred to account Akutan. After this is confirmed, we will begin preparations for ship ownership codes to be sent to you on a secure line. I hope this is all satisfactory towards your position. If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

I look forward to hearing back from you soon.

Dear Mr. Molitor

Please accept my apologies for the delayed reply. Duties as captain, coupled with the ever-turning wheels of bureaucracy required to release the funds, have kept me occupied.

I am pleased to inform you that the agreed amount has been transferred to the bank account you specified. For your convenience, I have attached a copy of the confirmation. I now await receipt of the launch codes.

May I also inquire regarding on-board provisions—specifically fuel, armaments, communications, and scanning systems. Will these be fully prepared upon our arrival, or should we plan to bring along a support vessel for the final outfitting?

Unsere herzlichsten Grüße,
Hermann Schmidt

Good afternoon Mr Schmidt,

Be advised that this payment is for the hull only. Purchases of additional equipment such as shields, auxiliary propulsion, and weapons are not included in this. The hull has, however, been fully fueled for your convenience.

We have confirmed payment and have transferred ship ownership codes to your account by secure line. Should you have any difficulties in the transfer or additional questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

Thank you for your business.
