To the attention of the Rheinland Ministry of Culture and Historical Preservation, New Berlin

Subject: Discovery of the E.V. Morgenstern, Former Rheinland Government Exploration Vessel (710 A.S.)

Esteemed Officials,

We write to inform you of the recovery and positive identification of a vessel long believed lost: the E.V. Morgenstern.

Archival evidence and encrypted logs recovered aboard the ship establish that the Morgenstern was one of the two modified Pilgrim Liners commissioned by the Rheinland government as part of Geological Reconnaissance Convoy 710-A, launched from New Berlin on January 1st, 710 A.S. Its mission, alongside the rest of the convoy, was to survey resource-bearing systems beyond known space in the aftermath of the 80-Years War.

The Morgenstern and her crew did not return from that mission. Until now, her fate has remained uncertain. The material we have recovered paints a picture of a long and arduous journey, marked by both endurance and tragedy. What emerges is not a mere technical report but the record of men and women who, at the edge of Rheinland’s reach, upheld their duty until the very end.

It must also be noted that Orbital Spa & Cruise came into possession of the ship almost a century ago, through what appeared to be the purchase of an unregistered Pilgrim hull. At the time, the vessel’s true origin was not known; only with the recent recovery of her encrypted logs has her nature as a former government exploration vessel become clear. As a result, the ship is presently listed in Orbital’s registers,

Recognizing both the cultural significance of this discovery and the ship’s potential for preservation, Orbital Spa & Cruise is prepared to cooperate closely with the Ministry in evaluating the most appropriate future for the vessel. Restoration is among the possibilities we consider, ensuring that the Morgenstern may continue to stand — whether as a historical monument, a living testimony, or a carefully revitalized example of Rheinland engineering.

We therefore respectfully invite the Ministry to dispatch a delegation of experts and historians to examine the ship directly. Full access to the vessel, as well as to the recovered mission logs, will be granted for proper study. These records are too extensive and too significant to be summarized here, but we are confident that their value will be clear to your representatives.

The Morgenstern has, against all probability, returned to Rheinland. We believe her legacy — and the sacrifice of her crew — deserve to be formally acknowledged.

Respectfully,

Herr Hermann Schmidt
Captain (provisional custodian of the E.V. Morgenstern)

On behalf of the crew:
Herr Albert Neer, First Officer
Herr Hans Belck, Chief Engineer

Official Response:

Guten tag herr Schmidt.

It is with great interest that we have reviewed your message. After internal discussion among the ministries we have decided to send out an envoy from the Ministry of the Interior to assess the condition of the ship, and where to go from here. Susanne Huber will be your contact person going forward.

I thank you for your forthcoming with this matter, and i hope we will find an amicable solution in the future.

Subject: Assessment of the E.V. Morgenstern, Former Rheinland Government Exploration Vessel (710 A.S.)

Esteemed Officials and Frau Huber,

We thank you and the Ministry for your swift and considerate reply. It is an honour to know that the Government of Rheinland takes interest in what we, too, regard as a matter of historical and cultural importance.

Orbital Spa & Cruise welcomes the decision to dispatch an envoy to examine the E.V. Morgenstern. The vessel is currently in a stable orbit over Baden-Baden, under our supervision and technical custody. Our teams are available to facilitate access, provide documentation, and ensure a safe and productive inspection.

We will be pleased to receive the Ministry’s representatives on Baden-Baden. Suitable accommodations and work facilities have already been arranged for the visiting team, so that the inspection and related consultations may proceed with comfort and efficiency.

As noted in our previous correspondence, the Morgenstern has been part of Orbital’s registered fleet for nearly a century, following its acquisition in good faith. We therefore trust that any future deliberations will take into account the company’s role as both custodian and stakeholder in this discovery.

We look forward to meeting Mrs. Huber and the appointed team at a date and time convenient to the Ministry. We are confident that this collaboration will help us find the best path forward for preserving and honouring a remarkable chapter of Rheinland’s exploration history.

With sincere regards,
Hermann Schmidt
Captain (acting custodian, E.V. Morgenstern)
