Soooo
They also dont want to rp, they want that you lose your time/effort/credits and cargo.
He could also rp something instead of dropping or dying.
Navy/pirates needs to give the traders opportunities to get away with their cargo.
In the last year I got 3 smugglers, who provided enough RP for my taste. In the end they had to move to Mecklenburg Prison, where their cargo was inRPly confiscated. 2 of them logged off seconds after they docked. One waited a minute and returned moving to the Sigma-13 jumphole with the cargo. It's always based on the amount of RP the smuggling side provides...
If I would go the hard way, I could always kill a powersmuggler and take the cargo afterwards. The Rheinland Police has a shared cargo confiscation ship for such situations. Sometimes I even ping indies in the lawful emergency chat to don't waste the contraband.
First timer here. I've recent interaction with some kind of piracy here.
The interaction is described as follows;
- The "Pirate" was waiting(?) beside the jump gate at one time. I've passed it several times (Might be?). Normal interaction as fellow sky farer (exchange greetings).
- Suddenly it asked me to halt, I stopped just before I hit dock on the jump gate to see where this thing goes (RP, right?). It demanded that I drop my cargo (2/5). Just two sentences; halt (not even a Capital) and to drop 2/5 of my cargo.
- I'm thinking, "Huh, he's a pirate?"; "But wait!?, his Tag was IMG, a mining guild and my cargo wasn't raw material.". I then looked at the reputation list (F8?) to see whose allies, competitors and enemies of IMG. For the note; It's my first time in Discovery Freelancer (I don't know what's new); It's been a long time since I played Freelancer (I'm not agile at all in looking for the information); I don't know how to drop 2/5 of my cargo; and I do the thinking in silence (Not responding, imagine it like Patrick Star).
- I was working for Samura to deliver half finished materials (That was my cargo). Samura was not their competitor nor enemy. IMG listed as a lawful independent faction. So I thought that it was weird RP. After silently not responding to the demand, It says "It's a pity that you don't comply.", and it shot me.
- I docked the jump gate, and it follows me until I've met my demise. A drifting life pod in the void of space.
The positive was it was a good pirate-like RP if it was an NPC. Halt; Choose; Emotion; Shoot; A very NPC-like behaviour.
The weird was interaction point 3 and 4. The "Pirate" was not even registered as an enemy for me, personally and factionally.
The conclusion is as followed;
- I encouraged a good RP piracy, but not NPC-like. Background check RP character please.
- I'm a newcomer (not a returning player). Please consider the needs of newcomer to be settled. It is a struggle for the peasant when the "chaebol" being a pirate.
- Lots of discussions before seems cornering the Trader side. Please consider viewing from the other perspective. A what if.
- I'm not angry or annoyed, just in a daze. If new player encounters similar event like mine and repeatedly, they will likely annoyed and not playing anymore. It's not PVP like battlefield, it's Multiplayer Online RP game that most player forgot; The first ones to join will have the most advantage.

You most likely ran into a pirate with a spoofed IFF. Generic factions (like Freelancers, Pirates, Smugglers, Researchers) can run whatever IFF they want by grinding reputation. You could have also ran into an Alien-Infected or a Military Intelligence agent, who can spoof their IFF. This change isn't exactly recent, but also isn't exactly laid out for you to see. The thing that determines what a player actually is and what rules they have to follow is their ID, which is mounted in the internal equipment next to their nanobots, shield batteries, scanner, and engine. Generally, we tend to treat the ID as invisible, or else the rules would make infiltration and espionage completely unplayable. However, I don't think there's ever been a direct "yeah, ID's are invisible" statement.
Chances are that was not a real IMG, just a pirate flying IMG flag to trick people.
I'll do something about my superiority complex when I cease to be superior.

I happened to be flying past at that moment. An "Archon" from the official IMG faction was firing at a non-resisting transport...

IMG| ID Wrote:This Independent Corporate official faction ID is used by Independent Miners Guild members, who:
- Can attack any ship in defense of allied ships.
- Can engage in piracy against competitors outside of House Space.
- Cannot dock Cruisers, Battlecruisers, or Battleships in House Space, except on IMG bases.
- Cannot use ships with more than 4,300 cargo space.
Within Zone of Influence (Bretonia and bordering systems, Taus, Omegas):
- Can attack ships considered hostile by the IMG.
- Can attack competitors outside of Bretonia.
- Can enforce laws outside Bretonia.
- Can engage in piracy against Corporate ships outside of Bretonia.
IMG| official faction feedback can be found here. I recommend bringing this incident up with them.
Also, while currently Samura isn't listed as a competitor of IMG in the faction infocards, they should be. Samura is currently trying to overrun and monopolize Taus with the help of the Kusari government and military. If anything, instead of competitors, I'd think IMG and Samura should just be directly at war. This, however, is a question of administration. I also requested that Liberty and Kusari navy be hostile rep to each other, since they are actively engaging in a standoff in Galileo, and that was denied as well.

When I tried to stand The Banished Legion (LGN) up (and was still bothering to login and play), I pirated regularly in the Omegas--mostly those passing through with Iridium or Gold as that route tends to pass through there, mostly Omega-5. Normally, I'd run into one of four individuals.
1 - Silent runners who just engage cruise over and over again trying to escape usually resulting in their death.
2 - Silent engagers who usually try to run at the same time while firing everything they have at me--also resulting in their death.
3 - People who get really pissed off both in system chat and private chat out of character, flaming you, insulting you, and taunting you if they manage to escape--time to open a VR.
4 - Genuine roleplayers who enjoy the encounter and both parties walk away satisfied.
1 through 3, I just killed outright after figured out how the encounter was going to play out. I'd take their cargo (I was in a frigate) and would sell it at the highest place that I could--usually netting myself a nice profit. The 4th type of player was so uncommon that they could almost not be mentioned. Keep in mind, I did this for around about four days or so. I think I ran into maybe(?) three individuals that was a fun encounter (with one being CDI giving me a citation for my ship being a mess, lmao). The rest were just shitbags--encounters that I'd rather forget to be perfectly honest.
Eventually I just gave up. Why should I spend my time outside of work dealing with this annoyance?
TL;DR - Most common encounters as a pirate are silent runners, silent engagers, and OORP insults. With that being the case, what is even the point of playing a pirate?
You fear oblivion. Yet you forget. The universe remembers every atom of your being. Even dust hums your name in the dark. Roleplay is dead. Long live Powertraders and PvP I guess.
