I can't seem to find the control to switch to the inside-the-cockpit view.
The 'turret view' key doesn't seem to work, it locks the 3rd person view and just swivels the guns.
I can't fight worth a crap hovering 30 feet behind my ship ...

That checkbox appears to do nothing ...

The checkbox turns on the cockpit model when you're in cockpit view - turning it off gives you a slightly less impeded view.
The standard keybind for 1st person is CTRL + V. Most people don't find it very useful for combat though. Quite handy for lining up larger ships with trade lanes though, as it'll stick the dock point directly on top of the camera in most instances.
