just to clarify, what exactly is the multiplayer file that needs to be saved?

Not so much a file as your Account ID.

As long as you have that, you can get to your characters.

If you have multiple accounts on the same server, each account will have it's own ID number.

Make sure you back them up!

Along with what Mickk said, you probably also save your accounts' IDs and Signatures.
