Eh. I dunno about you guys, but I don't mine for the sole purpose of making credits. I mine because I like to roleplay within my faction. Hate to be a Debbie Downer, but I really think the direction the mining mod goes doesn't really matter. There's someone who's going to be upset no matter what decisions are made. It's just a matter of who's going to be upset at any given time. I recall being in that Mining Corporation Skype Chat we had just after the mining mod was turned back on. I left because it was an endless stream of "X is better than us, they have higher yields and easier routes!" Everyone's convinced that everyone else is set up better than they are.
I know when I'm on a mining job with the GMS guys I welcome a pirate encounter. Yeah, it's stressful, but gosh darn I love quipping back and forth with a pirate, be it with words or antimatter. And if you organize your operations, you don't leave yourself open to heavy losses. I can empathize with players who can't find a group to mine with. I don't feel bad for people who won't find people to mine with. Logistics, boys. We're all grown-ups here, coordinate.
Daedric mentioned our style of operation. I'm not saying everyone should do this, but if it works, it works. One guy in a Hege/Transport who switches in and out to fill a few loads. Everyone else on light miners. Not only do they get bonuses now, but gosh golly can a group of mining snubs kick some tail, both in filling the transports and fending off malcontents. We've put down a number of Outcasts who thought they were coming up on some squishy carebears, and got our behinds handed to us as well, but we sure stood a much better chance than if we'd been in lone mining transports.
My point is that for every complaint for the mining system, the solution lies in player adaptation, not continual changing of the server mechanics because, frankly, that's a futile effort. I'm sure our guys have better things to do than waffle on ore prices. Mind you, mining as it was before the shut-off was never the intended permanent fix. Mining was turned on and buffed to hell in order to make it super attractive and to pull people away from trading. It was never intended to stay that way, but the rebalance never came, until just recently.
Back to the top, though. What does it matter if you're making profit hand over fist? This is Discovery RP 24/7, not Discovery Money Mining 24/7. If you can't make people want to go out and mine just to roleplay their character, perhaps the issue isn't the mining, it's the guys organizing the group roleplay. We shouldn't blame pirates for our own shortcomings. As far as things are concerned, as long as they're not going "2MILORDIE", they're doing an outstanding job.
Addendum: After re-reading, I think I came across a lot grumpier than I really am. Sorry 'bout that.
Mining gets nerfed and miner and ore hauler numbers drop off a cliff.
See a link there?
This is not piracy at work. It's system mechanics. Market forces even, assuming pirates, unscrupulous law enforcers and the odd freelancer are part of that 'market'.
When diamonds and niobium were the 'in thing', nothing could stop the endless trade convoys running between the two bases. It was all bottlenecking through one system. Outcast, Corsairs, Blood Dragons to name but a few fought for their right to loot the transports as they passed, not to mention the GC at one end and the Hessians at the other.
The route got nerfed and the convoys stopped over night.
In disco, the carrot is always bigger than the stick or no one will bother to go for the carrot and the stick just moves off somewhere else.
For my money, mining was hit harder than maybe it should have been, but it's early days still. Suck it and see...
Perhaps the next alteration won't be quite so dramatic?
Slowly slowly.
' Wrote:Niobium run passes: Outcasts in T23 (8K from Cali base on the way to the jumphole). 3 Kusari core systems in which Hogosha have free reign. Sigma 13 which can have junkers, dragons, GC, Outcasts and Corsairs. Finally Frankfurt which is reasonably safe as long as Rorry ain't there;)I've never been pirated in New Berlin so I assume few people try that.
Diamond run passes: Omega 11 with a heavy Hessian presence. Stuttgart with as much a single lane bottleneck as Kyushu, so no difference there. Rest of the route is identical to the niobium run, so I'm not sure why you deeming it a whole lot safer... it about evens out. Outcasts for Hessians, basically. So a price roughly equal to the silver and Niobium run makes sense.
[Edit] And I know what you're going to say about the radiation - but the faster fill balances that out. Repair costs in respect to commodity value mined shouldn't even need to be mentioned. I will grant you that it'd make sense for Solarius to keep spare mining lasers on-hand, if you feel they should be added there, that can be done.
Except Daumann also has to contend with Corsairs. And the Outcasts rarely if ever pirate, they prefer sitting around in their huge caps and steamrolling IMG zephyrs or something like that. The situations are not comparable in the slightest, I could make much more money mining in easy peasy Tau-23 than in Omega-11 where you will get steamrolled if not by RHA then by RF then by Sails then by an independent ku ex pirate, possibly in plural.
Dragons are also active in Kusari and especially on the lookout for Daumann ships heading to Narita. And lets not forget, in Tau-23 you don't mine in radiation and about 20k away from a base that is actually used by pirates, because Cali is only a speed dock point for OC capitals running away from IMG bomber/zephyr spam.
Uncut diamonds should get a price buff. The danger is much higher, and Daumann are far more universally hated than IMG is. Think about it, how come the IMG faction + indies are such a large group? Because the IMG are the Zoners of mining, and 4.84 Zoners at that. Daumann has it far harder and they need a better incentive for Omega-11. I know many other people who agree with bumping the uncut diamond price, and I can get them to post in this thread to show their approval for a change like this if necessary.

I think we all know that that responsibility lies elsewhere.
Solution: Make the simple act of ore mining predictable and reliable again. In addition open even more fields to spread out the prey even more.

What I think I am going to do here is just keep hammering this point and reposting this thread over and over and over because there is no legitimate argument against boosting the sale price of uncut diamonds. Comparing it to the IMG niobium run which is the easiest run in Sirius due to lack of any pirates on the route at all (the few that are there are neutral/friendly with IMG) is absolutely ridiculous. The only danger is that you might run into a Hogosha, and that is all after you passed New Tokyo its basically a home free run.
Also I think that this is a case of unintended bias. Sorry Aet, I like you but there must be some reason why mining in Tau-23 doesn't die, but only mining in Omega systems is ever nerfed. At least Omega-7 mining is now sort of ok, but the price for diamonds still needs to be bumped to give people a reason to mine in the extremely unfriendly system that is Omega-11, and then carry said diamonds through several more systems of pirates who absolutely hate Daumann's guts, all the way into Kusari where they get pirated by Hogosha and Dragons one after the other.
Oh, its that time again? I Q_Q'd too, here, here and in many other places. Some things changed, others still need some work but at the end of the day things are way better than a couple of months ago. We need more traders than miners anyway.
PS: I would still love to see the Daumann/Kruger problem solved, either via bounties or direct hostilities
