Do you have the Windows Update running in the background. Windows likes to phone home now and then to download (automatically and without telling you) updates to itself. Usually this causes severe lag on the network and hogs the processor. You can either let it do its business or turn that function off (or at least set it to ask before downloading).

What version of Windows are you using? I hear Vista is the worst about this.

If I had it my way, everything would run off Linux and toss Windows.

EDIT: Punctuation and grammar.

' Wrote:I've already attempted a cleaning of said HDD and it's a no go, can't get the files off the System Volume Information because you know you can't write to it and when you try to open the folder it denys you access.

To remove files, in this case virus', from your System Restore Volumes. You'll have to delete all your System Restore Points, which will remove the virus. I'm not sure if it's the best way to do it, but it's the only one I know of. So!
  • 1. Right click on My Computer and hit Properties.
  • 2. Click on the "System Restore" tab and check the box to turn off System Restore Points, and hit apply.
  • 3. Turn System restore points back on, and create a new Restore Point (Just incase)
That will delete every restore point you have, including where the virus is. Make sure you make a new Restore Point afterwards, just incase you'll need it later. Enjoy.

Can you formated your PC ? I thinks it's a solution , if you are desperate ...
If the problems are Windows Installer ... you can find some Linux Version with Windows Component ( i don't know if is legal ) like Windows Trust or Windows LSD ( I used one of this , I have no problems , than my precedent version , WinXP Family Edition Certified Original )

I hope you solve your problems

Youll pay few bucks, but u wont have to trouble yourself, because if its something with hardware, they will probably solve it...

If not, deleta all u have and re install windows...

If you can fix it yourself, I say do it.

So you've narrowed it to either an issue with the on board LAN or a virus? While it sounds more like a virus to me there is always credence to attempt to disprove all possibilities. Can you use an alternate network card, or get one just so you can rule that out?

Don't consider this to be your only option though, all the above suggestions are valid and relevant too. Investigate them all mate.
